Air travel trips increased by 11.6% year over year but stayed 18.7% below September 2024 levels, indicating that passenger demand has not returned to its earlier level.

The decline in Canadian travel to the United States has been linked to political tensions, trade disputes and repeated tariff measures introduced under U.S. President Donald Trump.

These factors have affected travel sentiment, although Air Canada has identified commercial considerations and the alignment of capacity with demand as the basis for its network reviews.

Charleston is particularly notable because Toronto Pearson–Charleston was Air Canada’s only nonstop connection between Canada and South Carolina.

The state attracts Canadian winter travellers, but demand for some U.S. destinations has weakened considerably in recent travel seasons.

Photo: Airbus

Air Canada Adds New Routes

Despite cutting five routes, Air Canada is also expanding selected parts of its U.S. network for summer 2027. The airline plans to launch services between Toronto Pearson and Louisville (SDF), Montréal and Indianapolis (IND), and Edmonton (YEG) and Newark (EWR).

Toronto–Louisville service is scheduled to begin on April 28, 2027, with operations increasing to daily frequency during the season.

Montréal–Indianapolis flights are planned to operate daily from June 1 through September 30, while Edmonton–Newark will operate four times weekly from June 1 through October 17, Global News reported.

The contrasting changes show how Air Canada is reallocating capacity rather than withdrawing from the U.S. market altogether. Travellers affected by the cancellations may still reach several destinations through other Canadian gateways, connecting flights or alternative airlines.

The airline’s schedule adjustments also reflect a wider industry response to changing demand and operating costs.

WestJet has previously announced reductions to its U.S. network, while other Canadian carriers have adjusted schedules in response to commercial pressures and higher fuel costs.

Stay tuned with us.
