However, the aircraft subsequently crossed the runway instead of stopping at the designated holding point, placing it on a runway being used by arriving traffic.

The runway incursion prompted an immediate response from the air traffic controller, who instructed the Etihad aircraft to stop while directing the approaching regional jet to go around.

The incident was captured in publicly circulated air traffic control audio, which documented the exchange between controllers and the aircraft crews.

A runway incursion occurs when an aircraft, vehicle or person incorrectly enters a protected area designated for aircraft takeoffs and landings. On June 20, 2026, an American Airlines Boeing 737-800 and a Delta Air Lines Airbus A319 were involved in another runway incursion that resulted in a go-around, according to an incident report published by NTSB Reports.

In that earlier event, the American aircraft began its takeoff roll on runway 27 while the Delta aircraft was approaching runway 33L to land.

The aircraft came within approximately 670 feet (204 metres) of each other, although neither aircraft sustained damage and no injuries were reported, Simple Flying reported.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) defines a runway incursion as the incorrect presence of an aircraft, vehicle, or person on the protected area of a runway designated for takeoffs and landings.

The agency classifies these incidents according to their severity, ranging from events with no immediate safety consequences to situations in which a collision is narrowly avoided.

The October 15 event highlights the importance of following taxi instructions, particularly when aircraft are moving near active runways.

Although air traffic controllers intervened and the arriving regional jet landed safely on its second approach, the incident raises further questions about how the runway crossing occurred despite the crew acknowledging the hold-short instruction.

Stay tuned with us.
