The new provisions forbid passengers from using Meta AI glasses to covertly film staff or fellow seatmates.

The policy comes just months after the airline banned passengers from photographing or videoing cabin crew and other customer-facing workers without their express consent.

Those rules also forbid live-streaming anyone without their permission. Cabin crew and other British Airways customer-facing workers are already banned from using smart glasses themselves.

Passengers are still permitted to wear Meta AI glasses. Doing so could lead to increased scrutiny from staff who fear they are being covertly filmed.

The glasses have an LED light that shows when recording is taking place. Some reports say certain wearers deliberately cover the light to hide that they are recording.

Photo: Robbie Klinkenberg| Wikimedia Commons
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:British_Airways_Airbus_A320_G-EUYA_at_Schiphol_24-11-2022.jpg

British Airways Set Its Own Smart Glasses Rules

The United Kingdom takes a fairly relaxed approach to the right to privacy in a public space. In public, a person can be photographed or videoed without consent, and has few options if they object.

The key issue is what counts as a public place. A normal street, a park or even an airport would count as one. A British Airways aircraft does not, because passengers must pay for and hold a ticket to board.

As a result, British Airways can set its own rules through its General Conditions of Carriage. The document is essentially a rule book that outlines what passengers can and cannot do, and what consequences they face if they break the rules.

Photo: Clément Alloing

Conditions of Carriage Sections

British Airways has amended 2 sections of its conditions of carriage.
