Reports indicated that shrapnel or another projectile struck the parked aircraft during the attack, triggering the fire.

Two nearby aircraft also sustained damage, including an Airbus A321neo delivered to Saudia in April 2026. The incident demonstrated how an attack targeting an airport can damage several aircraft within a confined area.

Saudia confirmed that no passengers were aboard the destroyed A320. The October 8 attack also killed three people, including an airline captain, according to reports.

The destruction of the A320 represents a total aircraft loss for insurance purposes. The airline had five aircraft parked at Riyadh when the attacks escalated and subsequently relocated four of them.

Flight-tracking data recorded three Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners departing Riyadh on October 13 between 15:16 and 15:49 local time.

Two aircraft flew to AlUla, while a third transferred to Medina. A fourth aircraft moved from Riyadh to Lahore later that day. These movements reduced the airline’s exposure to additional damage while the airport remained closed or subject to severe operational restrictions.

Relocating aircraft creates its own operational challenges. Airlines need suitable parking stands, flight crews, maintenance support and the necessary permissions at alternative airports. Aircraft may also require positioning flights before they can return to normal commercial service.

For Riyadh Air, protecting its Boeing 787 fleet is particularly important because the aircraft represent valuable assets in the airline’s early stages of commercial operations.

Photo: Riyadh Air

Aircraft Numbers at Riyadh Airport Fall by 72%

The evacuation effort has sharply reduced the number of aircraft on the ground at King Khalid International Airport.

According to Flightradar24 data reported by The Wall Street Journal, the number of aircraft at Riyadh fell from 134 on October 8 to 38 by midday on October 14.

Measure

Aircraft count

Aircraft on October 8

134

Aircraft on October 14

38

Reduction

96

Approximate reduction rate

72%

The figures represent 96 fewer aircraft on the ground in less than a week. A subsequent Wall Street Journal report indicated that reopening was not expected until Sunday night, October 18. The reopening timeline therefore remained subject to updated operational and security information.

The disruption extends beyond Riyadh as airlines reassess services to other Saudi destinations and adjust aircraft rotations. The timing could make the Riyadh incidents particularly important during insurance negotiations.

War-risk insurance covers specified losses associated with armed conflict, subject to each policy’s terms, exclusions and limits. Depending on the circumstances and coverage, policies may respond to aircraft damage caused by missile strikes or other hostile acts.

Insurers also consider the concentration of aircraft at major airports. When many aircraft are parked near each other, one attack can generate several claims at once, increasing the potential for concentrated losses.

Marcos Alvarez, managing director at Morningstar DBRS, highlighted this exposure in comments to The Wall Street Journal.

“A single strike on a busy hub could cause exactly the kind of concentrated loss war insurers fear most,” Alvarez said, according to the newspaper.

The destruction of the Saudia A320 illustrates the financial risk of keeping aircraft on the ground when an airport faces repeated attacks. The damage to other aircraft could also lead to costly engineering inspections, structural repairs and component replacement, depending on the findings of technical assessments.

Photo: By Anna Zvereva from Tallinn, Estonia – Saudia, HZ-AR11, Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=73594090

Final Insurance Costs Remain Uncertain

The final cost to insurers will depend on the extent of the damage to the five surviving aircraft, the applicable policy conditions and the resulting repair or replacement assessments.

The destroyed Airbus A320 is a total loss, but the financial treatment of the other aircraft will depend on whether repairs can return them to service and how much work is required.

The incident has also highlighted a broader challenge for airlines operating from major hubs during periods of conflict. Moving aircraft can reduce their exposure to further attacks, but it can complicate maintenance, scheduling and fleet deployment.

As airlines continue to reposition aircraft and review their operations, the six damaged aircraft and the evacuation of valuable fleets from Riyadh demonstrate the commercial risks that missile and drone attacks pose to civil aviation.

Stay tuned with us.
