This allowed travelers to book long-haul business-class trips for significantly fewer AAdvantage miles than normally required.

Travel writer Gary Leff reported that some travelers secured business-class awards to Delhi for as little as 7,000 miles per person. Other bookings included business-class travel to Europe for 12,500 miles per person each way and journeys returning from Australia for 10,000 miles per person.

The pricing issue attracted attention in private travel groups over the weekend of September 19, 2026. According to Leff, American largely disabled the affected booking method around September 20 and 21, although it reportedly became available intermittently again on September 27.

This is insane.

American Airlines sold me 16 tickets, issued them, took my miles + money…

Then nearly 2 weeks later, they canceled ALL 16. becasue they said they made a mistake

I’d already spent $5,000+ planning these trips.

Has this happened to anyone else? @AmericanAir… pic.twitter.com/yT6YA8MOQW
— josh (@joshlessard200) October 6, 2026

Leff estimated that between 1,000 and 2,000 tickets may have been issued before the airline restricted the booking process. The reservations included 18 passenger tickets for him and his family.

The reported mileage prices varied by destination. The Australia trip cost 24,500 miles per person for the outbound journey and 10,000 miles for the return, with business class across the Pacific. The Italy trip cost 12,500 miles per person each way for business-class travel across the Atlantic.

The unusually low redemption rates made it possible for travelers to plan international journeys that would ordinarily require substantially more frequent-flyer miles. However, booking these awards carried the risk that American would identify the pricing problem and cancel the tickets.

American began contacting affected passengers and, according to Leff, generally offered them a choice between paying the prevailing mileage price and canceling their reservations. One reported passenger obtained an agreement to travel in business class to Europe for 57,500 miles per person each way instead.

Photo: Aero Icarus | Flickr

American Airlines Canceled Tickets Weeks After the Error

American’s cancellation timeline became the main point of contention. Leff said the airline canceled all 18 of his tickets on October 9, nearly three weeks after the original bookings and approximately 20 days after the airline reportedly identified the problem.

Other travelers also reported cancellations. In one complaint described by Leff, passenger Christopher Rusch said American had acknowledged attempting to contact him about the mileage-pricing issue on September 26 at 3:21 p.m. Central Time. His cancellation notice was dated October 5 at 10:59 a.m. Central Time.

Leff also said American had attempted to call him on September 28 but had not left a voicemail. He subsequently received cancellations for his reservations on October 9.

In an email quoted in his report, American attributed the problem to a technical issue that caused the mileage amount displayed during booking to differ from the amount required by its system. The airline said the reservations had been ticketed for fewer miles than required and could not be maintained at those rates.

The email stated that American would reinstate the miles deducted from the affected AAdvantage accounts and refund any taxes or fees to the original payment method. It also invited the passengers to discuss rebooking at the mileage price considered correct by the airline.

Leff disputed the explanation that customers had been charged a different mileage price from the one displayed at booking. He said the initial search had shown a higher price, but the payment page displayed the lower amount that American subsequently charged.

He also argued that American had already contacted him before issuing the cancellation notice. According to his account, the airline ultimately offered no way to preserve the affected reservations at their original mileage prices.

Photo: Clément Alloing

American’s Published Conditions Set a 72-Hour Deadline

The central issue is American Airlines’ stated procedure for canceling tickets issued at mistaken prices.

Under its currently published Conditions of Carriage, American says it will void a ticket, issue a full refund and notify the passenger within 72 hours after learning of a mistaken fare. For a ticket purchased less than 72 hours before departure, the stated deadline is at least 24 hours before departure.

Leff also cited the airline’s international tariff, which he said contains a similar 72-hour requirement for erroneous fares.

According to his account, American identified the pricing problem around September 20 but continued canceling tickets in early October. He argued that the published deadline applied from the time the airline learned about the error, rather than from the date an employee contacted an individual passenger.

The distinction matters because the airline’s terms establish a specific timeline for correcting mistaken fares. Leff’s complaint does not simply argue that American must honor every incorrectly priced award. Instead, it challenges whether the airline followed its own published cancellation procedure.

American’s Conditions of Carriage provide for the cancellation of mistaken fares, but the timing of cancellations in this incident has prompted questions about how that provision applies to tickets already issued.

Photo: Cado Photo

U.S. DOT Policy Allows Mistake-Fare Cancellations Under Conditions

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) changed its approach to mistaken fares on May 8, 2015. Under its mistaken-fare enforcement policy, the department said it would not enforce the post-purchase price protection rule against qualifying mistaken fares when airlines demonstrated that an error had occurred and reimbursed customers as required.

The policy requires more than simply returning the original ticket payment. Airlines seeking to benefit from the enforcement policy must also reimburse reasonable, actual and verifiable out-of-pocket expenses that passengers incurred in reliance on the mistaken ticket.

The DOT’s consumer guidance identifies expenses such as non-refundable hotel bookings and rental-car reservations as examples. The guidance also explains that post-purchase price protection applies to tickets purchased with money or points, subject to the applicable mistaken-fare policy.

This framework means airlines do not necessarily have to honor every ticket issued at an erroneous price. However, the cancellation process and the treatment of expenses incurred by affected passengers remain important considerations.

Photo: Clément Alloing

Some Passengers Reported Thousands of Dollars in Travel Costs

The cancellations also affected travelers who had already arranged other parts of their trips.

In a complaint described by Leff, passenger Sophia Jacobi said she booked Japan award travel for two people on September 19. The itinerary included transpacific business class for 13,500 miles per person outbound and 7,500 miles per person on the return.

Jacobi reportedly canceled earlier premium-economy reservations after securing the new award tickets. American subsequently canceled the replacement awards on October 5, less than five days before the original departure, and she said the airline refused to restore the earlier reservations.

Her complaint cited approximately $6,000 in prepaid arrangements in Japan. To salvage the trip, she reportedly purchased replacement United Airlines economy tickets costing $2,554.18 for two passengers. The replacement itinerary involved flying to Seoul and buying a separate ticket to Tokyo.

These figures come from the passenger complaint described in Leff’s report. They illustrate the potential financial consequences when travelers make hotel and transportation arrangements after receiving ticket confirmations.

Under the DOT’s mistaken-fare policy, eligible expenses incurred in reliance on canceled tickets may be subject to reimbursement requirements. Whether particular expenses qualify depends on the applicable policy and the facts of the individual case.

Photo: American Airlines

DOT Complaint Focuses on American’s Cancellation Process

Leff said he filed a complaint with the Department of Transportation over American’s handling of the affected tickets. His stated argument was that the airline should follow the cancellation and notification deadlines in its published contractual documents, rather than simply invoke its authority to correct pricing errors.

The dispute therefore involves two separate questions: whether American could cancel awards issued at mistaken mileage prices, and whether it complied with its own stated deadline when doing so.

American’s published terms recognize its ability to cancel mistaken fares, while the account of the September and October cancellations raises questions about the timing of that process. The material reviewed here does not establish a final regulatory finding against the airline.

The outcome may matter to travelers who rely on confirmed award reservations to arrange flights, hotels and other parts of international trips. It also highlights why the timing of a cancellation can be as important as the airline’s decision to correct a pricing error.

Stay tuned with us.
