On October 13, the service used a Boeing 737-800 registered as 9H-CXD. Flight-tracking information recorded its departure from Corfu at approximately 11:05 a.m. local time.

During the flight, the aircraft transmitted squawk code 7500, an internationally recognized signal indicating a hijacking or other unlawful interference. The signal prompted an immediate security response because air traffic controllers could not establish radio contact with the pilots.

According to German police, the cockpit transmitted the hijacking code before communication with the aircraft was lost. Authorities could not immediately determine whether the alert indicated a genuine security threat, so they activated emergency procedures.

Corendon Airlines subsequently explained that a brief malfunction in the radio communication system caused the signal. The airline said the code was transmitted while the aircraft was flying over Croatian airspace.

The carrier stressed that no emergency situation had occurred and that the passengers, flight crew and aircraft had not been in danger.

Photo: Wikimedia Commons

Two Eurofighter Typhoon Jets Escort the Boeing 737-800

The German Air Force dispatched two Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets from Neuburg Air Base in southern Germany to intercept and escort the passenger aircraft.

The fighter jets accompanied the Boeing 737-800 until it reached Nuremberg Airport. Their deployment followed the loss of radio communication and the transmission of the suspected hijacking code.

Germany maintains rapid-response fighter units to assess potential threats involving civilian aircraft. According to the German Air Force information cited by Reuters, incidents involving lost communication with civilian aircraft prompt such responses approximately once or twice a month.

The escort allowed authorities to monitor the aircraft as it approached its destination. The Boeing 737-800 subsequently completed its flight and landed safely at Nuremberg Airport.

Photo: Munich Airport

Boeing 737-800 Lands Safely at Nuremberg Airport

Flight XR456 landed at Nuremberg Airport at approximately 12:16 p.m. local time, around one minute behind schedule. The flight took approximately two hours and 11 minutes, accounting for the time difference between Greece and Germany.

After landing, the Eurofighter Typhoon jets completed their escort mission and returned to their base. However, the incident required additional security checks before passengers could leave the aircraft.

German police carried out inspections to determine whether the plane or its occupants faced any threat. Officers subsequently found no evidence of danger and permitted passengers and crew to disembark.

The aircraft carried 178 passengers, according to the Associated Press. Passengers were allowed to leave after authorities completed their initial checks.

The safe landing and subsequent inspections established that the alert had not involved an actual hijacking. The incident nevertheless caused disruption because airport authorities had to treat the signal as a potential security emergency until they could establish what had happened.

Photo: avgeekwithlens/ Harsh Tekriwal

Nuremberg Airport Closure Disrupts Other Flights

Nuremberg Airport temporarily suspended operations while authorities responded to the incident and assessed the security situation. Flight operations later returned to normal.

The closure affected airlines operating scheduled services to and from the Bavarian airport. However, reports published during the incident provided different figures for the disruption.

A Flightradar24 snapshot cited in the original report showed 35 delayed flights and three cancellations. Separately, the Associated Press, citing an airport spokesperson, reported six delayed flights and two inbound diversions. The figures reflect different reported snapshots of the disruption and should not be treated as a single confirmed total.

Flight-tracking reports also listed diversions involving several European services:

Marabu flight DI6035: The service from Mallorca Airport (PMI) diverted to Stuttgart Airport (STR).

Corendon Airlines flight: A service from Mallorca diverted to Munich Airport (MUC).

Wizz Air flight: A service from Cluj International Airport (CLJ) diverted to Memmingen Airport (FMM).

Ryanair flight: A service from Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO) diverted to Prague Airport (PRG).

These diversions added to the operational impact of the temporary closure, requiring affected aircraft to land at alternative airports before their onward journeys could continue.

The Boeing 737-800 involved in the incident, registration 9H-CXD, was also scheduled to operate a subsequent flight to Gran Canaria Airport (LPA). The emergency response and post-landing inspections affected the aircraft’s planned operations, although the final departure time was not confirmed in the available reports.

Photo: avgeekwithlens/ Harsh Tekriwal

Radio Malfunction Ruled Out a Genuine Hijacking

The Corendon Airlines incident highlights the importance of transponder codes and radio communication in aviation security. Squawk code 7500 signals suspected unlawful interference, requiring controllers and relevant authorities to take the situation seriously.

When the cockpit could not be reached after transmitting the code, German authorities followed precautionary procedures, including scrambling fighter jets and temporarily suspending airport operations.

The airline’s explanation of a radio communication malfunction and the authorities’ subsequent inspections established that no actual hijacking threat had been identified. The aircraft landed safely, passengers and crew were not harmed, and Nuremberg Airport resumed normal operations.

The incident demonstrated why aviation authorities must verify unexpected emergency signals before treating an event as resolved, even when the initial alert ultimately proves to be the result of a technical malfunction.

Stay tuned with us.
