DUBAI-<\/strong> Emirates (EK)<\/a> reportedly denied boarding to a Russian passenger at Mexico City International Airport (MEX) after she said her European visa had expired, disrupting her journey to Dubai International Airport (DXB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The passenger, identified as Maria, shared a tearful video online explaining that her itinerary included a stop in Barcelona\u2013El Prat Airport (BCN). Spain’s airport transit visa rules for Russian ordinary passport holders, effective July 12, 2025, may explain the reported incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Spain’s Transit Visa Rules Affected the Emirates Passenger<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Maria, a Russian woman who reportedly lives in Dubai<\/a>, posted a video from Mexico City International Airport after she was unable to board her Emirates flight to Dubai. In the video, she expressed shock over the decision and referred to her expired European visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The text accompanying the video stated that Emirates had not allowed her to board the flight from Mexico to Dubai. Her explanation pointed to the Barcelona stop as the reason for the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emirates operates its Mexico City service through Barcelona because the airline’s route connects Mexico with Dubai via Spain. The airline introduced the linked service in December 2019, allowing passengers to travel between Mexico City, Barcelona and Dubai on the same flight number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Russian nationals holding ordinary passports must obtain a valid airport transit visa to pass through the international transit areas of Spanish airports. The requirement took effect on July 12, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This rule can apply even when a passenger does not intend to enter Spain and plans to continue to another country. An airport transit visa allows eligible travellers to pass through the airport’s international transit area without entering Spanish territory, Live and Let’s Fly<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Expired Visa May Not Meet Transit Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Spain’s transit requirements include exemptions for certain travellers who hold qualifying valid visas or residence permits<\/a>. However, an expired visa does not automatically satisfy these conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Living in Dubai also does not, by itself, exempt a Russian ordinary passport holder from Spain’s airport transit visa requirement. The applicable rules depend on the passenger’s nationality, travel documents and eligibility for an exemption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
