The cause had not been established in the October 8 report.

The aircraft was the first Airbus A320neo ever delivered to Austrian Airlines and was four years old at the time of the incident. Its damage prevented the aircraft from operating its planned return flight to Vienna.

The incident and the airline’s explanation for the continuing delay were reported by aeroTELEGRAPH on October 8.

Flight-tracking services showed that OE-LZN remained at Heathrow 20 days after the incident. Austrian Airlines confirmed that an Airbus-prescribed repair was being carried out at the London airport.

The airline had initially expected to bring the aircraft back to Vienna within a few days of the incident. However, it did not announce a confirmed date for the transfer. The required repair work in London delayed the planned movement, and the airline continued to assess the next steps.

Photo: By BriYYZ – Flickr: Austrian A320-200 OE-LBU, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=17255177

Austrian and Swiss Technicians Prepare Transfer Flight

Austrian Airlines and Swiss Technik were working together to prepare the aircraft for its transfer from London to Vienna.

The airline stated that the aircraft would fly without passengers and that specially trained pilots would operate the transfer flight.

The transfer depends on the completion of the required technical work. The aircraft could not return to normal operations until the necessary engine arrangements were resolved.

This case illustrates how shortages of replacement components can affect aircraft availability, even when an aircraft is already part of an airline’s active fleet.

Another A320neo, registration OE-LZQ, was out of service for almost a year following a collision with a passenger boarding bridge. The incident resulted in an extended period of unavailability.

The circumstances differed from those affecting OE-LZN. The Heathrow case involved a tailstrike and Airbus-directed repairs, while OE-LZP and OE-LZQ experienced different maintenance or damage-related problems. Together, these cases show the different factors that can keep aircraft out of service for long periods.

Photo: SuperJombo, Wikimedia
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Austrian_Airlines_B777-2Z9ER_(OE-LPA)_taxiing_at_Sydney_Airport.jpg

Future Outlook

The next steps for OE-LZN depend on completing the current repair work in London, confirming the location for further maintenance and preparing the passenger-free transfer flight.
