It will also support coordination among specialists from the three partner nations as the programme progresses through its design and development activities.

According to Aerospace Global News, the Turin facility is the first of 3 planned Edgewing engineering hubs, with additional sites intended for Japan and the United Kingdom.

Edgewing expects more than 300 employees from the UK, Italy and Japan to work at the Turin site by the end of 2027. The company also plans a second building in 2027, with more than 1,000 employees expected at full operational capacity.

The projected workforce expansion reflects the scale of the engineering activities planned for the site. The facility will bring together personnel from the three partner nations to work on the technical requirements of the future combat aircraft.

Video: Leonardo | Embed

Edgewing CEO Marco Zoff said the new facility represented another step in the company’s expansion across its three nations. He highlighted Turin’s engineering expertise and innovation as important factors in accelerating the programme and delivering faster than previous-generation projects.

The expansion also strengthens Turin’s role in the international aerospace sector by placing the city at the centre of GCAP’s engineering network in Italy.

Photo: Leonardo

Edgewing and the Three-Nation GCAP Partnership

Established in 2025, Edgewing serves as the industrial lead and design authority for the GCAP aircraft. Its three industrial partners are BAE Systems in the United Kingdom, Leonardo in Italy and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co (JAIEC) in Japan.

The company is based in Reading, UK, where the joint headquarters with the GCAP Agency was established. The Reading location also accommodates offices for the G2E and Power Systems consortia.

GCAP relies on collaboration among the three participating nations, with equal ownership and equal workshare identified as core principles of the partnership. The Turin engineering hub is the first physical manifestation of this shared development structure.

The collapse of the Franco-German Future Combat Air System (FCAS) fighter programme provides important context for the emphasis on collaboration. In the European programme, the division of responsibilities proved contentious. GCAP’s commitment to equal ownership and workshare places particular importance on cooperation among its national partners.

Earlier in 2026, the tri-national GCAP Agency awarded Edgewing contracts worth more than $6 billion to advance work on the future fighter. These contracts support the engineering and design activities needed to move the programme forward.

Personnel working at the Turin hub will be seconded from their existing roles at BAE Systems, Leonardo and JAIEC. This arrangement brings experience from each partner company into the shared engineering organisation.

Some employees are relocating thousands of miles with their families to join the programme in Turin. Their participation illustrates the international nature of the project and the commitment required to establish a common engineering team.

Giuseppe Lupoli, General Manager of Edgewing in Italy, said the new facility would give engineers the opportunity to contribute to advanced, digitally driven engineering. He also welcomed the prospect of colleagues from all three partner nations working together at the Italian site.

The workforce structure is intended to support collaboration across national boundaries while drawing on the experience and technical capabilities of the three industrial partners.

Photo: Edgewing

GCAP Fighter Development and Tempest Demonstrator

The Turin hub is opening as development work on the future fighter advances. BAE Systems is in the final stages of assembling its Combat Air Flying Demonstrator, which will test systems and technologies intended for the full-scale Tempest aircraft.

The demonstrator is designed to help evaluate technologies that will underpin the future fighter. Its first flights are planned for late 2027, providing a significant milestone in the programme’s development schedule.

The flying demonstrator and Edgewing’s engineering network form complementary parts of the wider effort. While the demonstrator will test relevant systems and technologies, the engineering hubs will support the aircraft’s design and the development of its systems and subsystems.

The Turin site therefore represents progress in establishing the organisation and infrastructure required to advance GCAP across its three partner nations.

GCAP Graphic images

Nagoya and Warton to Complete the Engineering Network

Edgewing plans to establish two further engineering hubs in addition to Turin.
