The carrier originally announced in May 2026 that Starlink would be installed on more than 500 Airbus aircraft beginning in the first quarter of 2027.

The October expansion adds the rest of the mainline fleet, including Boeing narrowbodies and widebodies.

The enlarged program will cover more than 1,000 aircraft. American’s published fleet breakdown lists more than 500 Airbus narrowbody aircraft, more than 400 Boeing narrowbody aircraft and more than 130 Boeing widebody aircraft, for a total mainline fleet of more than 1,030 aircraft.

The announcement makes the earlier Airbus-focused plan the first stage of a much broader connectivity strategy.

The expanded rollout is intended to create a more consistent Wi-Fi experience across American’s global mainline network rather than limiting the newest technology to one aircraft family.

The original May plan covered American’s Airbus A320 family, including the A319, A320, A321, A321neo and A321XLR. American’s official announcement said the initial order covered more than 500 Airbus aircraft, including incoming A321neo and A321XLR deliveries.

The new fleetwide commitment extends Starlink to American’s Boeing aircraft as well. That includes the Boeing 737 narrowbody fleet and the Boeing 777 and 787 widebody fleets highlighted in the earlier reporting.

Mainline fleet category

Aircraft count

Airbus narrowbodies

500+

Boeing narrowbodies

400+

Boeing widebodies

130+

Total mainline fleet

1,030+

American says more than 165 million customers fly on its mainline aircraft each year across four fleet families. The original May announcement specified the first quarter of 2027, while the latest fleetwide announcement describes the start more generally as early 2027.

American has not announced a final completion date for installing Starlink across all 1,000-plus mainline aircraft. That means the program will likely require a substantial multiyear installation effort, although the airline has not provided a detailed aircraft-by-aircraft schedule.

The timing gives American a meaningful opportunity to improve its onboard connectivity while it continues broader customer-experience investments. Airline fleet upgrades take time to complete, so the scale of this program is as important as its technology.

Photo: Cado Photo

Starlink Could Transform Inflight Wi-Fi Experience

Starlink is designed to provide high-speed, low-latency satellite connectivity. American says its installation will support activities such as streaming, online gaming, real-time collaboration, browsing and messaging.

The system will use Starlink’s Performance Aero Terminal. American says the terminal can deliver speeds of up to 1 Gbps per terminal.

That figure represents the terminal’s stated capacity and does not mean every passenger will receive 1 Gbps, because actual performance depends on factors such as aircraft configuration, network capacity and passenger demand.

For passengers, the practical advantage is responsiveness as much as peak speed. Faster satellite connectivity can make activities such as loading webpages, joining online meetings, sending files and streaming video more usable during a flight.

American Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden said dependable connectivity can influence how customers spend their time onboard, from watching streamed entertainment and gaming to working and shopping online.

SpaceX also expects customers to receive fast, reliable internet from gate to gate. Delta said the program would add faster, low-latency connectivity while expanding its existing Delta Sync Wi-Fi and seatback experience.

That creates a clear difference in announced deployment schedules. American plans to start installing Starlink in early 2027 across a fleet of more than 1,000 mainline aircraft. Delta’s current Amazon Leo plan begins with 500 aircraft in 2028.

The comparison does not mean Delta lacks good Wi-Fi today. Delta already operates complimentary Wi-Fi across much of its fleet and is investing in its connectivity platform. The competitive issue is the next-generation satellite system each airline has selected and the scale and timing of those future installations.

For American, adopting Starlink fleetwide removes one of the most obvious differences between aircraft types. Passengers will eventually have a stronger chance of seeing the same connectivity platform whether they board an Airbus narrowbody, Boeing 737 or long-haul Boeing widebody.

Photo: Clément Alloing

United Raises Competitive Standard

United Airlines provides another important benchmark. United reported in its second-quarter 2026 results that Starlink was installed on 450 United mainline and United Express aircraft and that the airline remained on track to bring Starlink to its entire fleet by the end of 2027.

That means American’s expanded commitment is not occurring in isolation. United is already deploying Starlink across both mainline and regional operations, while American’s current announcement specifically covers its mainline fleet.

The difference matters because regional flights represent a significant part of a large network carrier’s operation.

American’s new announcement creates fleetwide mainline coverage, but it does not announce Starlink for American Eagle regional aircraft.

Photo: By Grant Wickes from Plano, TX (Dallas), USA – American Airlines Boeing 777-200 N775AN Photo_251, CC BY 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=33465811

Earlier Report Became an Official Announcement

The fleetwide expansion was not completely unexpected. On October 2, OMAAT reported that American could extend Starlink beyond its Airbus fleet, citing an October 1 report from JonNYC that identified the Boeing 737, 777 and 787 as possible additions to the program. At that time, the expansion remained unconfirmed.

American formally confirmed the broader strategy on October 8, turning that earlier report into an official fleetwide announcement. The final plan now covers all mainline Airbus and Boeing aircraft rather than only the more than 500 Airbus aircraft included in the May announcement.

This progression also illustrates why the latest announcement is more significant than the original Starlink deal. American has moved from a limited aircraft-family commitment to a network-wide mainline strategy.

Photo: Clément Alloing

Regional Aircraft Remain Outside the Plan

American’s new Starlink announcement applies to the mainline fleet. The airline has not announced a comparable fleetwide Starlink installation program for regional aircraft operated as American Eagle.

That is a notable difference from United. United has said Starlink is being deployed across its mainline and United Express fleet, with the whole operation targeted for completion by the end of 2027.

Passengers therefore may still encounter different Wi-Fi experiences on American depending on whether their flight operates on a mainline American aircraft or a regional aircraft.

The mainline commitment is nevertheless substantial. With more than 1,030 aircraft in the current mainline fleet and more than 165 million annual mainline customers, the program covers a very large share of American’s passenger experience.

Photo: American Airlines

American’s Customer Experience Upgrade

Starlink is only one part of American’s broader onboard modernization. The airline is also upgrading cabins, premium seating, entertainment and other customer-facing technology.

American’s recent investments include expanded premium seating across its narrowbody fleet and new seatback entertainment plans for new Airbus and Boeing narrowbody deliveries beginning in 2028. The airline has also been expanding connectivity options as part of its wider customer-experience strategy.

The Starlink decision stands out because connectivity affects passengers across cabins. A faster internet system can benefit business travelers working onboard, families staying in contact, and leisure travelers using streaming and online services.

The fleetwide strategy also makes the upgrade easier to communicate. Instead of promoting Starlink only on selected aircraft, American can position high-performance satellite Wi-Fi as a standard part of its future mainline experience.

Photo: Tobias Gudat

Bottom Line

American Airlines will bring Starlink Wi-Fi to more than 1,000 mainline aircraft, expanding the program from its original 500-plus Airbus plan to the full Airbus and Boeing mainline fleet. The rollout is scheduled to begin in early 2027, although American has not provided a final completion date.

The program includes Airbus A320-family aircraft, Boeing narrowbodies and Boeing widebodies, giving American one of the largest planned Starlink-connected airline fleets. The Performance Aero Terminal is rated by American for speeds of up to 1 Gbps per terminal, while the airline expects the service to support streaming, gaming, real-time work and everyday online activity.

The move also puts American in a stronger position against two major U.S. competitors. United is targeting Starlink across its entire fleet by the end of 2027, while Delta has selected Amazon Leo, with an initial 500-aircraft installation planned for 2028.

For American passengers, the biggest benefit may ultimately be consistency. A fleetwide Starlink strategy gives the airline a clear path toward faster and more dependable connectivity across its mainline network.

Stay tuned with us.
