Customers face paid seat selection, one checked bag instead of two, no voluntary itinerary changes, cancellation fees and reduced mileage earning.

United’s short-haul international Business Base fares follow a similar approach. A general MileagePlus member without an eligible United card earns no redeemable miles, while an eligible cardholder without elite status earns 3 miles per dollar.

Delta First Basic also limits the premium experience. Restrictions include paid advance seat selection in some cases, one checked bag instead of two, a $300 change or cancellation fee for trips originating in the United States or Canada, no same-day confirmed changes or standby even for elites, and base earning of two miles per eligible dollar instead of five.

JetBlue’s BlueFirst Base follows the same trend with change and cancellation fees, paid standby and a points-earning reduction of about two-thirds.

A regular coach fare can therefore offer more flexibility than a much more expensive basic first class ticket.

Spirit Airlines (NK) helped establish the idea of selling a larger seat separately under a fee-based model. Its Big Front Seat created value through additional space without providing the complete premium experience of a legacy carrier.

Breeze Airways (MX) sells its first class seat separately from its Nicest bundle. Frontier Airlines (F9) and Allegiant Air (G4) are also moving toward larger recliner-style premium seats.

The competitive landscape is moving in opposite directions. Low-cost airlines are improving their physical premium product, while major airlines are adopting restrictions associated with low-cost carriers.

United and Delta still provide meals, but connectivity is also becoming less distinctive. United’s Starlink advantage will not remain unique as Frontier adds the technology as well.

Photo: Delta

First Class Sells Convenience, Not Just Space

Passengers buy first class for room, work space, company-funded travel, celebrations and personal rewards. Many also pay for the feeling that the trip will be easier.

That means choosing a seat, handling baggage and making reasonable changes without repeatedly paying for basic conveniences.

First class is not purely a status-driven Veblen good, but it has an aspirational component. Customers pay for more than a wider seat, a drink and a meal.

That value becomes harder to defend when the passenger still faces coach-style restrictions. Domestic first class is already a recliner product on many aircraft, service can vary, and extra-legroom economy can be comfortable enough for many travelers.

Photo: Clément Alloing

Why Airlines Are Unbundling First Class

The strategy is a form of price discrimination.

Airlines want to sell empty premium seats to customers unwilling to pay the standard fare without giving the same discount to passengers who would have paid more.

Restrictions can help separate those groups. A traveler booking close to departure may care less about flexibility, while an elite member may already have additional baggage benefits.

The problem is that mild restrictions may not change purchasing behavior. Stronger restrictions may work, but they also damage the premium experience.

That creates a longer-term risk. Short-term fee revenue may look attractive while customers become less willing to pay for first class, trade down to coach or choose competitors.

Photo: United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby LinkedIn Page

International Airlines Have More Premium Value to Protect

Qatar Airways (QR) sells Business Lite without included Al Mourjan lounge access, while Emirates (EK) charges Business Special customers for advance seat selection.

Both show that premium brands can survive some unbundling.
