The incident occurred before departure in September 2026. Colombian media later reported on the confrontation after footage from the encounter circulated online.

According to Daza’s account, a member of the Delta crew asked him to give up his assigned seat so a woman could sit next to her husband. He initially agreed to help, but reconsidered after seeing the replacement seat.

Daza described the alternative as smaller and less comfortable than the seat he had originally selected. He therefore declined to make the change.

The disagreement then became more serious. Daza says another crew member approached him and asked for his name. He became uncomfortable with how the interaction was developing and began recording with Meta smart glasses equipped with a camera.

The recording subsequently became part of the dispute. Daza says crew members asked him to stop filming. He also says he asked to speak with the captain, but was later told that the decision had already been made to remove him from the flight.

#INJUSTO. The airline said Daza was removed after failing to follow instructions from the crew.

Delta emphasized that the safety of customers and crew remains its highest priority and that employees must be able to maintain a safe and respectful onboard environment. However, the company’s public statement did not identify the specific instruction Daza allegedly refused to follow.

That distinction is important because the publicly available accounts do not establish that the original refusal to exchange seats was, by itself, the reason for his removal.

Minuto60 separately reported, citing an unnamed source, that the dispute may have centered on Daza’s refusal to stop recording. The publication noted that Delta’s official statement did not specifically confirm that explanation.

Photo: By Aero Icarus from Zürich, Switzerland – Delta Air Lines Boeing 757-212; N750AT@MSP;12.10.2011/624al, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=26712089

Incident Details

Delta confirmed that the incident involved flight DL983 operating between Bogotá (BOG) and Atlanta (ATL) and that it occurred in September 2026. That does not necessarily mean the passenger must accept any replacement offered. Daza says he was willing to consider the request but rejected it after seeing a seat he considered materially worse.

Airlines can require passengers to move seats for legitimate operational or safety reasons. Aircraft changes, seat configuration changes, weight and balance considerations, emergency equipment requirements, and other operational circumstances can make reassignment necessary.

A request made solely to accommodate another passenger’s seating preference is different from a mandatory operational or safety change. In such a situation, alternative options could include asking another traveler to switch, finding a comparable seat, or allowing the couple to remain separated.

The available information does not establish that Daza was refusing a safety-related seating instruction. Continuing to record during a tense interaction can make communication more difficult.

At the same time, a passenger involved in a disputed encounter may want documentation of what happened. A recording can preserve statements and conduct that might otherwise be reduced to conflicting recollections.

The existence of a recording does not, on its own, establish that a passenger was disruptive or threatening.

The more important questions are what the passenger was doing, what instructions he received, and whether he complied with instructions that were necessary for safety, security, boarding, or orderly operation of the flight. Those facts remain incomplete in the public record.

Photo- Delta (For illustrative purposes only)

Exact Crew Instruction Matters

Delta’s statement that Daza failed to follow crew instructions is significant, because passengers are expected to comply with legitimate directions from flight crews.

However, the statement does not identify the instruction at issue.

Was Daza ordered to stop recording? Was he given another instruction related to his conduct? Was there a safety or operational reason for the seating change? Did the dispute involve behavior beyond the recording itself?

The answers could materially change how the incident is assessed.

If the removal followed continued refusal to comply with a legitimate safety or operational instruction, Delta’s position would have a stronger factual basis. If the dispute involved only a voluntary seat swap and the decision to continue documenting the encounter, more context would be needed to explain why removing the passenger became necessary.

Delta may have additional information that has not been publicly disclosed. The available reports therefore do not support a definitive conclusion about who was primarily responsible for the escalation.

Photo: Delta Air Lines (For illustrative purposes only)

Need for Better De-Escalation

The incident also raises a broader question about how routine seating disputes are handled onboard.

A request to help a couple sit together can often be resolved by offering another seat, asking another passenger, or accepting that the couple may have to remain apart. Once emotions rise, further pressure can make a relatively minor dispute more difficult to control.

Passengers also face a practical concern when a disagreement develops with crew members. Once a crew member has issued a legitimate instruction, continuing to argue can increase the likelihood of removal or further disruption, even when the original disagreement was relatively minor.

That does not resolve whether Daza’s removal was justified. It does show why clear communication and de-escalation are important when a voluntary request turns into a confrontation.

Photo- Delta News Hub; Wikimedia Commons (For illustrative purposes only)

What Remains Unclear

The public record currently contains Daza’s account, partial video footage, Delta’s statement that he failed to follow crew instructions, and Minuto60’s report from an unnamed source about the recording.

It does not provide a complete transcript of the interaction or an independently verified account of every instruction given.

Daza says the incident began with a request to surrender his seat so a couple could sit together.
