The combined company remains the fifth-largest provider of air transportation in the United States, while Alaska has been using the enlarged fleet, network, and loyalty platform to build a larger international operation.

The strategy is centered on Seattle, where Alaska has built its largest hub and is seeking a much stronger global position.

At its September 2026 Investor Day, Alaska Air Group said it plans to serve at least 15 long-haul intercontinental destinations from Seattle by 2030, raising its earlier target and signaling that further international expansion is a core part of its long-term strategy.

The carrier has already established a seven-destination intercontinental network for summer 2027. That network will include Tokyo, Seoul, London, Rome, Reykjavik, Paris and Athens.

Tokyo and Seoul were the first Alaska-operated long-haul routes from Seattle, followed by Rome, London and seasonal Reykjavik service in 2026. Paris and Athens are scheduled to begin in May 2027.

The possibility of Hong Kong has also received attention from aviation media, including Simple Flying, as Alaska continues to evaluate where its next long-haul aircraft can be deployed.

Alaska’s 787 Fleet Gives Seattle More Reach

The Boeing 787 is central to Alaska’s international strategy. Alaska established a 787-9 hub in Seattle as it began long-haul expansion, with the company’s firm orders expected to take the 787 fleet to 17 aircraft.

Alaska Air Group has also disclosed plans involving the 787-10, expanding the range of fleet options available for future international growth.

The fleet strategy extends beyond simply adding aircraft. Alaska is positioning its widebody operation as a premium-focused international product.

The updated 787-9 is planned to have about 46% premium seating, compared with 38% today, while future 787-10 aircraft will also receive the airline’s new premium product.

That configuration is important for long-haul markets such as Hong Kong because premium-heavy aircraft are designed to capture higher-value business and leisure demand.

Alaska’s current international strategy therefore combines greater range with a stronger premium cabin offering rather than relying only on higher seat volume.

Photo: Alaska Airlines

How Hawaiian Strengthened Alaska’s Long-Haul Position

The Hawaiian Airlines combination gave Alaska access to a wider widebody operation and strengthened its ability to build an intercontinental network.

Alaska and Hawaiian now operate a combined fleet that includes Boeing 787 and Airbus A330 aircraft, while Alaska has developed a dedicated Seattle-based 787 operation for its global expansion.

Alaska has used its 787s across major international markets while Hawaiian’s A330 fleet continues to support other long-haul flying. The result is a more flexible widebody platform than Alaska previously had when its network was dominated by narrowbody Boeing 737 aircraft.

The change also supports Alaska’s broader ambition to turn its extensive North American network into a feeder system for international flights.

Seattle gives the airline a large domestic customer base that can connect into long-haul services without requiring a separate US gateway.

ALSO READ: Alaska Airlines Reveals Luxury Aurora Suites for New 737 MAX 10

Photo: Alaska Airlines

Why Hong Kong Makes Sense for Seattle

Hong Kong would give Alaska a third major Asia destination from Seattle after Tokyo and Seoul. The city offers strong international connectivity, while Seattle has deep economic ties with the Asia-Pacific region and a large customer base with business, family and cultural connections across Asia.

The Pacific Northwest’s Asian diaspora is another potential source of demand. Seattle’s technology economy also provides a natural commercial link with Hong Kong, which remains an important international business and financial center.

Cathay Pacific itself has described Seattle and Hong Kong as cities with strong connections in technology, innovation and commerce.

Hong Kong would also fit Alaska’s oneworld strategy. Cathay Pacific is a oneworld member, while Alaska already uses its alliance and other global partnerships to extend the reach of its network beyond destinations it serves with its own aircraft.

Alaska’s Investor Day materials also show that the company intends to strengthen its international proposition through deeper joint-business relationships, subject to regulatory approval.

Photo: Alaska Airlines

Cathay Pacific Already Serves Market

Cathay Pacific returned to Seattle with nonstop Hong Kong service on March 30, 2026. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport already has extensive Asia-Pacific connectivity, with current international operators including ANA, Asiana, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, EVA Air, Hainan Airlines, Japan Airlines, Korean Air, Philippine Airlines, Singapore Airlines and Starlux. Delta also operates a significant Asia network from Seattle.

The depth of existing competition makes Alaska’s expansion more significant. A new Hong Kong service would compete in a market with established Asian network carriers while also giving Alaska a direct presence in another major trans-Pacific market.

Seattle’s international network has expanded rapidly at the same time. The Port of Seattle reported that the airport had reached 63 international nonstop services to 37 destinations on 29 airlines by August 2026, while Alaska’s own European additions helped push the airport’s international offering above pre-pandemic levels.

Hong Kong is only one possible direction for Alaska’s next expansion. Shanghai (PVG), Beijing (PEK), Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) and Bangkok (BKK) have all been discussed as potential future markets because of their size, regional connectivity and fit with Seattle’s existing Asia demand.

Seattle already has nonstop service to several of those markets, including Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing, which could give Alaska useful competitive and connecting data when evaluating future opportunities.

Alaska has not confirmed which cities will fill the remaining places in its 2030 target. The airline’s official position is that it plans to add at least five more intercontinental routes beyond the seven scheduled for summer 2027.

Photo: Cado Photo

Australia Remains Another Area of Speculation

Hong Kong is not the only long-haul market that has attracted attention. Aviation observers have also considered whether Alaska could eventually launch nonstop service from Seattle to Australia.

The speculation was partly fueled by Alaska’s onboard safety video, which featured the Sydney Harbour Bridge. That detail does not confirm an Australia route, and Alaska has not announced nonstop Seattle service to Sydney or another Australian destination.

The broader point is that Alaska’s new long-haul capability gives it more options across the Pacific. Its expanding 787 fleet could eventually support markets well beyond the current Tokyo and Seoul network, but each destination would still depend on demand, aircraft availability, economics and the airline’s final network decisions.

Photo: Colin Brown Photography | Wikimedia Commons
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:N625VA_-_Airbus_A320-214_-_Alaska_Airlines.jpg

What Alaska’s Next Route Announcement Could Mean

Alaska’s international expansion has entered a faster phase. The airline will have seven intercontinental destinations from Seattle by summer 2027 and is targeting at least 15 by 2030, leaving room for several additional Asia-Pacific routes.

Hong Kong stands out because it combines long-haul range requirements, strong business and diaspora demand, major onward connectivity and a clear role within Alaska’s developing Seattle strategy.

It would also create direct competition with Cathay Pacific on a route that is already proven to support a nonstop service.

For now, however, Alaska Airlines has not confirmed Seattle-Hong Kong service. The route remains a possibility within a much larger strategy to make Seattle a global hub, expand the 787 fleet and grow the airline’s long-haul network across Europe and Asia.

Stay tuned with us.
