WASHINGTON\u2014<\/strong> The former Qatari Boeing 747-8<\/a> now serving as an interim Air Force One <\/a>has been taken out of service for what an administration source described as \u201ccosmetic upgrades.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft, which operates from the Washington, D.C. (WAS) area and is assigned to the U.S. presidential airlift mission, remains unavailable while questions continue over whether its defensive equipment is also being upgraded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft entered presidential service on July 1 after the U.S. accepted the approximately 14-year-old, $400 million jet from Qatar and had it modified by L3Harris. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Donald Trump last flew the aircraft on September 16, but the administration has not confirmed when the 747-8 will return to service or whether the current work includes the security improvements Trump previously promised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing 747-8 Upgrade Details Revealed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The latest work appears narrower than the broader modernization Trump<\/a> previously described.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In September, he said the aircraft would be sent away for about 60 days to be \u201cmaxed out,\u201d including improvements to its interior and engines as well as changes intended to allow it to operate in more demanding environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, an administration source has now specifically characterized the ongoing project as cosmetic interior work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The White House has not publicly explained whether additional security modifications are being performed alongside the visible cabin improvements, leaving the full scope of the refurbishment undisclosed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft was developed as the VC-25B Bridge, giving the Air Force an interim presidential transport while Boeing works toward the next-generation VC-25B aircraft. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Air Force said the bridge program was accelerated to provide secure and reliable presidential airlift while the long-term aircraft remains under development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Missile Defense Questions Remain Unanswered<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The uncertainty is significant because the Qatari 747-8 has already faced questions about its defensive capabilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reports in July said the aircraft did not have the same defensive countermeasures as the older VC-25A fleet, including systems associated with protecting the aircraft from missile threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those concerns became more visible during Trump\u2019s July trip to Turkey<\/a>. The Secret Service urged him to leave Ankara aboard the older Air Force One rather than the Qatari aircraft, while later reporting linked the decision to concerns over a potential missile threat during heightened tensions with Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The White House has maintained that the Qatari aircraft has high-level security protocols, while the Air Force has not publicly detailed its classified defensive configuration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, there is still no public confirmation that the current refurbishment includes the same type of defensive equipment found on the legacy presidential fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bridge Aircraft Role Remains Limited<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Boeing 747-8 remains a temporary solution rather than the final replacement for the current Air Force One fleet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Air Force expects the long-term VC-25B aircraft to enter service later, making the bridge aircraft important for maintaining presidential airlift capacity during the transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For now, the clearest update is that the former Qatari aircraft is undergoing interior work, while the status of any additional defensive modifications remains undisclosed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its eventual return to presidential service could reveal whether the planned \u201cmaxed out\u201d upgrade involves more than cosmetic changes, Simple Flying<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
