SEATTLE\u2014<\/strong> A 71-year-old passenger died following a medical emergency aboard a United Airlines flight from Japan to the United States, forcing the Boeing 787-9 to divert to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident occurred on September 29 aboard United Airlines (UA) Flight 142, which was operating from Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT)<\/a> to Denver International Airport (DEN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft landed in Seattle after crew diverted the trans-Pacific service, allowing emergency medical personnel to board and assess the passenger. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The King County Medical Examiner later classified the death as natural and listed hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease as the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United Airlines Flight Diverts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

United Flight UA142 departed Tokyo on September 29 and was scheduled to fly nonstop to Denver. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flight tracking data shows that the Boeing 787-9<\/a> diverted to Seattle during the journey, where it landed before continuing to its original destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medical personnel met the aircraft after it reached Seattle. Despite efforts to assist the passenger, he was pronounced dead at the airport, and his remains were subsequently transferred to the King County Medical Examiner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The passenger was identified as Felmo M. Penola, aged 71. Authorities determined that his death resulted from hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, conditions involving high blood pressure and the narrowing and hardening of arteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medical Emergency Onboard United<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A medical emergency during a long-haul flight can require the flight crew to assess whether continuing to the planned destination remains appropriate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this case, the crew diverted the aircraft toward Seattle<\/a>, which is a major diversion point for aircraft crossing the Pacific toward the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United said Seattle is the closest major airport for many flights crossing the Pacific and can therefore serve as a practical diversion location for trans-Pacific services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airport’s position on the U.S. West Coast makes it accessible to aircraft approaching North America from Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident also involved assistance from people already onboard the aircraft. According to reports, three firefighters travelling as passengers helped provide medical assistance before the aircraft reached Seattle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing 787-9 Continues to Denver<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After the medical response and necessary procedures in Seattle were completed, the Boeing 787-9 continued toward Denver<\/a>. Flight tracking records show that the aircraft later returned to normal United Airlines service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft involved was registered N24980<\/strong> and carries construction number 66138. Flight-history data identifies it as a Boeing 787-9 operated by United Airlines, with the aircraft continuing to operate international services following the diversion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The death was treated as a natural medical event rather than an aviation accident. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diversion nevertheless highlights the importance of suitable alternate airports on long-haul routes, particularly when a serious medical emergency occurs far from the scheduled destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
