ATLANTA-<\/strong> Delta Air Lines (DL)<\/a> is facing a lawsuit from former flight attendant Candace Carter over an incident during a layover near Savannah\/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV). Carter alleges that a hotel reservation dispute led to racial slurs, her arrest, medical leave, and her termination from Delta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carter says the incident occurred at a Courtyard by Marriott hotel on March 17, 2025, after she arrived for an overnight stay following a Delta flight. She is suing Delta over her termination and alleged FMLA interference, while Marriott is accused of creating a racially hostile environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Hotel Reservation Dispute Escalated<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Carter had just completed a Delta flight and arrived in Savannah on the night of March 17, 2025. She was scheduled to stay overnight at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel as part of her layover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her lawsuit<\/a>, Carter waited for the hotel shuttle to pick her up from the airport, but the shuttle did not arrive as expected. She called the hotel directly and was told by the front desk clerk that her name did not appear on the list of Delta employees scheduled to stay at the property that night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carter then contacted Delta’s hotel reservation desk to resolve the problem. About 30 minutes later, the hotel shuttle arrived at the airport. Carter believed that the reservation issue had been corrected and traveled to the hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem continued when she reached the front desk. The clerk again told her that her name was not on the list and that she could not receive a room until Delta resolved the discrepancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carter was the only crew member on her flight who was scheduled to stay overnight at the hotel. The lawsuit says she was standing alone in full Delta uniform while trying to secure a room for the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alleged Verbal Confrontation at Hotel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Carter’s complaint says the front desk clerk became increasingly agitated during the dispute and began raising his voice. An argument followed, and the clerk allegedly threatened to call police and have Carter fired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the confrontation continued, an inebriated hotel guest who was holding a glass of wine and had overheard the dispute allegedly approached Carter and directed racial slurs at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The complaint alleges that the guest called Carter a \u201cblack Delta b***h\u201d a \u201cblack b***h\u201d and \u201cn****r\u201d b***h.\u201d. Carter further alleges that the front desk clerk joined the exchange by saying that she deserved to be called a b***h.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The complaint also alleges that the clerk told Carter: “B***h, I wish I could beat your Black ass myself.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carter says the police were then called. Her lawsuit alleges that the front desk clerk gave police a false account that portrayed Carter as the aggressor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The allegations have not been established by a court, and the lawsuit represents Carter’s account of the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carter’s Arrest and Overnight Detention<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to the complaint, police arrested Carter on a trespassing charge and took her to Savannah City Jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carter alleges that she was strip-searched and held overnight. Her husband later posted bail, allowing her to leave the jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lawsuit says the arrest and the events at the hotel left Carter deeply distressed. The complaint states that the incident resulted in depression and anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The arrest became central to the later employment dispute because Delta eventually received a report about what had occurred at the Marriott property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After leaving jail, Carter contacted her Delta manager and said she was unable to work. According to the complaint, she was too distraught to explain what had happened and simply told her manager that there had been an “incident.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carter then contacted Delta’s healthcare vendor to apply for leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act, or FMLA. She says the request was based on a recommendation from her physician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A short time later, Delta received a report concerning the incident at the Courtyard hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carter’s manager subsequently contacted her several times to obtain a written account of what had led to her arrest. Carter says her physician had advised her not to revisit the incident until her condition improved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The complaint states that Carter told her manager she would provide her account as soon as she was well enough to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delta Terminated Carter Before Her Account<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Carter says Delta terminated her employment on April 17, 2025, before she had provided her written account of the hotel incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She alleges that she was considered disabled because of her mental condition at the time of her dismissal. Carter argues that Delta discriminated against her by terminating her employment without conducting a full investigation or allowing her to provide her version of events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her lawsuit also claims that Delta interfered with her rights under the FMLA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The timing of the termination is a central part of Carter’s allegations against the airline. She contends that Delta knew about the incident, sought her written account while she was dealing with her medical condition, and ended her employment before she could provide that account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claims Against Delta and Marriott<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Carter has brought separate allegations against the two companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her claims against Delta focus on the circumstances surrounding her termination and her medical leave. She alleges discriminatory termination based on her disability and interference with her FMLA rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marriott is named as a defendant in connection with the alleged racial treatment at the hotel. Carter claims the incident created a racially hostile environment and alleges that Marriott bears responsibility for the conduct that occurred at the property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Federal Lawsuit Filed in Georgia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The case was filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of Georgia under case number 1:26-cv-05582.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carter is seeking legal relief against both Delta and Marriott based on the allegations contained in her complaint. The case remains a matter of litigation, and the allegations in the complaint have not been determined by a court to be true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proceeding will address whether Delta violated Carter’s employment rights, whether Marriott can be held liable for the alleged treatment at the hotel, and what legal remedies may apply under the claims presented in the lawsuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
