The continent’s leading hubs combine extensive airline networks, high flight frequencies and large numbers of possible connections, allowing passengers to travel between destinations with relatively convenient connection options.

The OAG Megahubs 2026 ranking measures international airport connectivity by comparing the number of possible connections between inbound and outbound flights with the number of destinations served.

OAG analysed 201 airports globally, with the 2026 ranking based on the busiest day for global aviation, 2 August 2026. Connections are calculated within a six-hour window where at least one of the flights is international, while destinations are based on services operated between September 2025 and August 2026.

Top 10 Best Megahubs in Europe in 2026

Europe has five airports inside the global top 10, while 17 airports from Europe, the Middle East and Africa appear in the global top 50. Istanbul Airport

Istanbul Airport takes first place among Europe’s megahubs and also ranks as the most connected airport in the world in 2026. Its connectivity index stands at 265.4, ahead of every other airport analysed by OAG.

The airport recorded 89,456 potential international connections and served 337 destinations during the 12-month period covered by the ranking. It also recorded 51.2 million seats between September 2025 and August 2026.

Turkish Airlines is the dominant carrier at Istanbul Airport, accounting for 80% of capacity. This unusually high share gives the airline an enormous network presence and helps the airport function as a major transfer point between Europe, Asia, Africa and other international markets.

Istanbul’s position also reflects the airport’s rapid development. OAG says the airport moved up from second place globally in 2025 to first in 2026, with Turkish Airlines continuing to expand its network of destinations and frequencies.

Photo: London Heathrow

2. The airport generated 55,888 potential connections and served 227 destinations during the period covered by the OAG ranking.

British Airways remains the dominant carrier at Heathrow, operating 50% of flights according to the European regional ranking supplied for 2026. OAG’s detailed global data puts British Airways’ share at 51% of capacity.

Heathrow’s strength comes from its enormous international network and its position as London’s principal long-haul gateway. The airport provides connections to destinations throughout Europe, North America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

However, Heathrow slipped from first to second place globally in 2026. OAG reports that potential connections fell by 6% on the busiest day compared with the previous year, with disruption to Middle East schedules also affecting its connectivity.

Even after that decline, Heathrow remains one of the world’s most important international transfer hubs.

Photo: By Ikreis – Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=89260293

3. Its network therefore combines a very large number of destinations with extensive opportunities for passengers to connect between international services.

KLM-Royal Dutch Airlines is the dominant carrier, accounting for 56% of flights. The airline’s extensive European and intercontinental network is a major component of Schiphol’s role as a transfer hub.

Schiphol also remained in third place globally compared with 2025. OAG notes that both capacity and the number of destinations served increased, helping Amsterdam maintain its position among the world’s leading megahubs.

The airport’s location gives it an important role between northern Europe and long-haul markets, particularly across North America, Asia and other parts of the world.

Photo: Frankfurt Airport

4. The airport connects the Greek capital with major European cities while also serving as an important gateway for travellers continuing towards the country’s islands and other destinations.

The airport’s location in southeastern Europe gives it an important position for connections between the continent, the eastern Mediterranean and surrounding markets.

Athens moved up five positions in the global ranking compared with 2025, reflecting stronger connectivity during the period measured by OAG.

Photo: Munich Airport

9. Like Frankfurt, Munich is a major Lufthansa hub and benefits from the airline’s extensive European and international network.

The airport served as an important gateway to southern Germany and the wider Bavarian region, while its network connects passengers with numerous destinations across Europe and long-haul markets.

Munich’s 2026 ranking represents a decline from the previous year, with OAG listing it sixth in the European ranking in 2025. Nevertheless, its combination of a major network carrier, extensive European connectivity and international routes keeps it among Europe’s leading megahubs.

The airport also remains one of Germany’s most important international aviation centres alongside Frankfurt.

Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO). Rome Fiumicino

Rome Fiumicino completes Europe’s top 10 megahubs in 2026, ranking 27th globally with a connectivity index of 126.1.

ITA Airways is the dominant carrier, operating 27% of flights. The airport’s network connects Rome with destinations throughout Europe and a wide range of international markets.

Fiumicino’s role is supported by Rome’s position as one of the world’s major tourism and cultural destinations. Millions of visitors travel to the Italian capital for its historic sites, museums, religious landmarks and business activity.

The airport has also recorded one of the biggest improvements among Europe’s leading megahubs. OAG’s 2026 data shows Rome climbing 13 places globally compared with 2025.

Its appearance in the European top 10 therefore reflects a significant improvement in connectivity and reinforces Fiumicino’s position as Italy’s principal international hub.

Europe’s Megahub Landscape in 2026

The OAG ranking shows that Europe’s biggest megahubs are heavily influenced by the strength of their dominant airlines. Turkish Airlines operates 80% of flights at Istanbul, while British Airways has roughly half of Heathrow’s flights and KLM accounts for 56% at Amsterdam.

Network carriers also play a major role elsewhere. Lufthansa has a substantial presence at both Frankfurt and Munich, Air France dominates Paris Charles de Gaulle and Iberia has a strong position at Madrid.

The ranking also shows that Europe’s connectivity is not concentrated solely in western and central Europe. Istanbul’s two airports occupy first and seventh positions, while Athens provides a major southeastern European hub and Rome gives southern Europe another highly connected gateway.

Five European airports are inside the global top 10: Istanbul, London Heathrow, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris Charles de Gaulle. Six additional European airports feature between 18th and 27th globally.

Another notable feature of the 2026 ranking is the movement of several airports. Madrid climbed seven places globally, Sabiha Gokcen rose eight, Athens moved up five and Rome gained 13 places. At the same time, Munich fell six places, demonstrating how quickly international connectivity rankings can change as airlines adjust their schedules and networks.

How OAG Measures Megahubs

OAG’s Megahubs Index is not simply a ranking of airports by passenger numbers or total flights. Instead, it focuses specifically on the potential for international connections.

For the 2026 edition, OAG considered all possible connections between inbound and outbound flights within a six-hour window where either flight was international. It then compared the number of potential connections with the destinations served from each airport. The analysis was based on the busiest day for global aviation, 2 August 2026.

This methodology means that an airport can rank highly because its schedules are structured to create large numbers of possible connections, even if another airport handles more passengers or operates more total flights.

The result is a ranking focused specifically on the role airports play as international transfer hubs.

Photo: © Konstantin ‘KVentz’ Ventslavovich, 2017

Bottom Line

Istanbul Airport leads Europe’s megahub rankings in 2026 and also holds the number one position globally, with 337 destinations and more than 89,000 potential connections. London Heathrow and Amsterdam Schiphol follow, while Frankfurt and Paris Charles de Gaulle complete Europe’s five airports inside the global top 10.

Madrid’s rise to sixth place, Sabiha Gokcen’s significant improvement and Rome Fiumicino’s 13-place global climb are among the most notable movements in this year’s European ranking. Meanwhile, Athens, Munich and Rome demonstrate the continuing importance of southern and central European hubs.

Overall, the OAG results show that Europe’s leading megahubs remain closely tied to the strength of their dominant network carriers. Airlines such as Turkish Airlines, British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa, Air France and Iberia continue to shape the connectivity patterns of the continent’s biggest international airports.

FAQs

Which is the best megahub in Europe in 2026?
Istanbul Airport ranks first among Europe’s megahubs in the OAG 2026 ranking.
