Instead of continuing toward Toronto, the crew redirected the aircraft toward Manchester Airport for a precautionary landing.

The aircraft landed safely on Manchester Airport’s Runway 23R about 30 minutes after the diversion decision. Flight-tracking records also place the aircraft’s landing at Manchester at approximately 3:57 PM local time.

The immediate reason for the diversion was a burning odour detected on board. The available incident report does not establish the source of the smell or identify a specific technical failure responsible for it.

The crew’s decision to divert meant the aircraft could reach a suitable airport without continuing across the Atlantic after the unusual smell was detected.

The earlier report from The Mirror said the flight had declared a mid-air emergency after the crew transmitted the international squawk 7700 code while over Scotland. That emergency signal alerted air traffic control that the aircraft required assistance and was followed by a change in course toward Manchester.

Photo: By tjdarmstadt – IMG_6836.jpg, CC BY 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=61529638

Passenger Reports Mention Smoke and System Failures

Passenger accounts provided additional details about conditions inside the aircraft, but these observations should be treated as passenger reports rather than independently confirmed findings.

One passenger reported that the lavatory lights stopped working and that the in-flight entertainment system also went offline.
