SEATTLE-<\/strong> Boeing<\/a> faces a critical labor deadline as about 17,000 engineers and technical employees represented by the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) prepare to vote on a revised four-year contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The existing agreement expires on October 6, 2026, creating a potential disruption for Boeing\u2019s certification programs if the proposal fails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The labor dispute comes as Boeing works toward certification and first deliveries of the 777X. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Airlines including Emirates (EK), <\/a>Lufthansa, Qatar Airways and British Airways are waiting for the new widebody, while Seattle (SEA)<\/a> remains central to Boeing\u2019s engineering and development operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing has said the latest proposal addresses key employee concerns and could help prevent a strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing SPEEA Contract Vote Nears<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

SPEEA members overwhelmingly rejected Boeing\u2019s earlier contract proposal in August and authorized a strike, increasing pressure on the company to improve its offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing subsequently presented a revised proposal that includes a 10% guaranteed wage increase, followed by another 4% increase in March 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest package also includes 6% annual wage pools for 2028, 2029 and 2030, with at least a 4% increase guaranteed each year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing says the proposal represents 34% in total wage funds over four years, with 26% fully guaranteed for employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SPEEA\u2019s voting period is scheduled for September 24 through October 1, giving both sides a narrow window to settle the dispute before the current contract expires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The outcome will determine whether Boeing can avoid a work stoppage involving employees who support major aircraft development and certification activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing 777X Certification Risk Deepens<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The 777X program<\/a> is particularly exposed because Boeing still has important certification work ahead of its planned 2027 deliveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing reported in July that the 777-9 had reached major milestones, but the aircraft still requires additional testing, analysis, and regulatory work before certification can be completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing\u2019s 777-9 test program has accumulated more than 4,700 flight-test hours, while customer aircraft are also being used to support certification preparations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lufthansa\u2019s first 777-9, for example, began flight testing with its customer cabin installed as Boeing continued work toward certification and delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A strike could therefore affect work beyond factory production because engineers and technical employees contribute to the analysis, documentation and certification activities needed to move the aircraft toward airline service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg has warned that a strike would shut down the 777X certification program until engineers return, potentially creating further delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Global Airlines Await Boeing 777X<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The labor dispute adds another challenge to a program that has already experienced significant delays and financial pressure. Boeing currently has more than 620 orders for the 777X family, highlighting the importance of completing certification and beginning deliveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emirates remains one of the largest customers, while Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific and British Airways are also among the airlines preparing for the aircraft, Live and Let’s Fly<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further delays could require carriers to keep existing widebody aircraft in service for longer while they wait for new 777X deliveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing is now attempting to secure approval of the revised SPEEA contract before the October deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If members ratify the agreement, the company can continue focusing on certification and its planned 2027 delivery target; if they reject it, the 777X could face another significant obstacle at a crucial stage of its development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
