Gen. Linda Hurry, commander of Air Force Materiel Command, disclosed the $14 billion supply gap during the Air & Space Forces Association’s 2026 Air, Space & Cyber Conference.

Hurry said the shortfall is affecting how the Air Force acquires aircraft parts and approaches sustainment funding. She emphasized that additional funding would need to be used efficiently because the service cannot address the entire gap at once.

The supply challenge has become more significant as the Air Force continues operating aircraft well beyond the age of many commercial and newer military fleets. Older aircraft typically require more maintenance, replacement components, and engineering support, increasing pressure on the supply system.

Hurry said the number of aircraft unavailable because of supply problems has increased by 87% over the past seven years. The figure highlights the connection between parts availability and the number of aircraft that can be returned to operational service.

Photo: USAF

Aging Aircraft Increase Pressure on Parts Supply

The Air Force operates a diverse fleet that includes aircraft designed decades ago. Some platforms have remained in service because replacing them requires major investments, long development timelines, and extensive infrastructure.

According to Hurry, around 53% of the Air Force fleet is more than 30 years old. She also said 55% of the fleet has moved beyond its useful service life.

The age of the fleet creates a sustainment challenge because manufacturers may no longer produce some components at the same scale as when an aircraft was new. The Air Force must therefore balance new production, existing inventories, depot maintenance and alternative sources for critical parts.

The service is also looking at its supply network globally. Hurry said Air Force officials are working with partners, the Defense Logistics Agency and depots to improve the movement of parts back to operational units.

Photo: US Air Force

FY2027 Budget Includes Sustainment Funding

The Department of the Air Force has requested a record $338.8 billion for fiscal year 2027, according to the supplied budget information. The request includes $4.2 billion for the Consolidated Sustainment Activity Group, or CSAG, which manages spare parts and maintenance backlogs.

The funding is intended to support the broader sustainment system, although it does not by itself eliminate the $14 billion supply gap identified by Hurry.

Hurry said the Air Force is advocating for the budget request and stressed that the service needs to be prepared to execute funding as soon as it becomes available.

The emphasis on execution reflects the operational impact of supply shortages. The approach is intended to create greater resilience if one manufacturer experiences production problems, capacity constraints or other disruptions.

Long-term contracts are also being developed to provide greater stability across the supply chain. Such agreements can give manufacturers clearer demand signals and help the Air Force maintain access to components over longer periods.

The shift toward multiple suppliers reflects the service’s concern about concentrated sources of supply. It affects the service’s ability to keep aircraft available for missions.

The 87% increase in aircraft affected by supply shortages over seven years, combined with the age of the fleet, has made sustainment a central issue for Air Force readiness.

The service is responding through additional funding requests, expanded supplier networks, long-term contracts, improved forecasting, artificial intelligence, additive manufacturing, and faster movement of parts through its logistics system.

The North Star campaign also provides an example of how targeted investment in parts and maintenance can affect the operational availability of combat aircraft.

For the Air Force, the challenge will be matching funding with execution while managing a fleet in which a significant share of aircraft has exceeded its original useful service life. The $14 billion figure underscores the scale of the parts requirement facing the service as it works to improve readiness across its global fleet.

Stay tuned with us.
