TEXAS-<\/strong> Air Education and Training Command (AETC) is on track to exceed its long-standing goal of graduating 1,500 new pilots in fiscal 2026<\/strong> under the Future of Undergraduate Pilot Training (FUPT) program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of Sept. 15, 1,408 pilots had already been winged, with another 147 expected to graduate before the end of the fiscal year. The result would put annual production above the 1,500 pilot benchmark that the US Air Force<\/a> had struggled to reach in previous years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US Air Force Pilot Training Reaches Major 1,500 Pilot Milestone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The projected milestone comes about one year after the US Air Force began a broad overhaul of undergraduate pilot training. AETC introduced FUPT to increase training capacity, reduce long-standing bottlenecks and support the service’s wider effort to address its pilot shortage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AETC commander Lt. Gen. Clark J. Quinn said the command had winged 1,408 pilots as of Sept. 15 and expected another 147 graduates before the fiscal year ended, subject to possible disruptions such as illness or aircraft maintenance cancellations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That would produce 1,555 graduates. Quinn described the result as about 50 pilots above the annual target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The milestone marks a significant change in pilot production after years in which AETC struggled to consistently reach 1,500 graduates per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AETC announced in spring 2025 that it would adopt a hybrid model combining private-sector flight instruction with military training. The goal was to reduce overall course time and create a training system that is more deliberate, data-driven, and aligned with the requirements of operational units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maj. Gen. Travolis A. Simmons, then commander of 19th Air Force, described the approach as a way to produce highly trained aviators while addressing long-standing limits in the existing system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under FUPT, much of the basic and initial flight instruction moves to commercial, university-based programs. Military-specific instruction remains at Air Force training bases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quinn said shifting foundational flight training to civilian partners allows the Air Force to reserve military aircraft, instructor capacity and flying hours for advanced training that requires military expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The structure changes where students acquire basic flying experience without removing the Air Force’s role in preparing them for military aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initial Pilot Training Starts With Civilian Aviation Schools<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first stage of the new system is Initial Pilot Training. Students receive 120 flying hours over 139 days at one of four flying universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After completing IPT, students receive private pilot licenses with instrument and multi-engine ratings under FAA<\/a> Part 141 standards. They then move into the Air Force’s Undergraduate Pilot Training, or UPT, system for military-specific instruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
