Nick Silva, president of the Allied Pilots Association, has questioned whether American Airlines could recover faster under different leadership. His comments do not amount to a formal announcement that Isom should be removed immediately.

Instead, Silva raised the question of whether another executive could “turn the ship around faster” and restore greater confidence among American employees.

As reported by OMAAT, Silva also acknowledged that Robert Isom could still be the person to lead the airline if he can deliver the needed turnaround.

His comments are therefore more measured than some of the stronger criticism the APA has directed at American management in the past.

That distinction matters because the criticism did not begin with the latest contract talks. In February 2026, APA asked to meet directly with American’s board over what it described as persistent operational, cultural and strategic concerns. Isom later agreed to meet with the union.

The current debate is therefore about both timing and history.

View From The Wing argues that the timing is connected to contract negotiations and internal APA politics, while the counterargument is that the union has been criticizing management for years and that the latest comments are simply another expression of those concerns.

Photo: Antonio Pirro

American’s Financial Performance

American’s profitability remains the central reason leadership is under pressure.

For full-year 2025, American reported adjusted pre-tax income of $352 million. Reuters reported that Delta generated about $5 billion and United about $4.6 billion in adjusted pre-tax income over the same period.

The second quarter of 2026 showed why the situation is more complicated than a simple revenue decline.

American reported record quarterly revenue of $16.7 billion, up 16.3% year over year, yet GAAP net income was only $71 million. Pre-tax income fell to $107 million from $838 million a year earlier.

Higher costs were a major factor. American’s aircraft fuel and related tax expense reached $4.9 billion in the second quarter, an increase of $2.2 billion, or 83.3%, from the previous year. The company said passenger revenue increased by 15.9% over the same period.

The financial challenge has become more immediate because of the latest fuel-price shock. On September 16, 2026, Reuters reported that American estimated its fourth-quarter fuel costs had risen by about $1 billion because of the recent surge in fuel prices.

The airline was responding by reviewing capacity and less-profitable flying.

These figures do not show that management is solely responsible for American’s financial results. Fuel prices, labor costs, fleet expenses, demand and broader economic conditions all affect airline margins.

They do show why the board, employees and investors continue to scrutinize the company’s strategy.

Photo: Clément Alloing

American’s Leadership for a Decade

Robert Isom’s tenure is important to the argument because his involvement in American’s senior leadership predates his appointment as CEO.

American appointed Isom president in August 2016, when he was promoted from chief operating officer. He became CEO in March 2022.

That makes him part of the leadership history behind many of the strategic decisions now being reconsidered. It also means criticism of his record cannot be limited to the period since he became CEO.

The original commentary behind this debate highlights Isom’s compensation as another part of the accountability question.

It calculates approximately $104.48 million in reported compensation across the 2016 through 2025 period, based on the company’s executive compensation disclosures. That figure represents reported compensation over multiple years and roles, not simply cash salary.

American’s 2026 proxy also shows Isom’s 2025 target annual direct compensation at about $15.2 million, including base salary and incentive opportunities.

The compensation figure does not establish whether Isom should remain CEO. It explains why the original commentary treats leadership accountability as a serious issue after a long period at the top of the company.

Photo: Scott Kirby LinkedIn Page

Scott Kirby Provides a Relevant Leadership Comparison

The comparison with Scott Kirby is another major part of the original argument.

Kirby served as American’s president before leaving the company in 2016 for United Airlines. Isom became American’s president at that time. Kirby later became United’s CEO.

American and United operate different networks and have different cost structures, fleet plans, labor agreements and commercial strategies, so their results cannot be attributed to one executive alone.

Still, the contrast has become part of the leadership discussion because United has significantly outperformed American financially in recent years.

The comparison therefore raises a straightforward management question: how much of the difference comes from external factors, and how much comes from strategic choices made by the leadership teams at the two airlines?

That question is especially relevant because the original commentary argues that American’s current weakness cannot be separated entirely from decisions made during Isom’s years in senior management.

Photo: Clément Alloing

American Has Clearly Changed Its Commercial Strategy

One point is not seriously disputed: American is making many of the changes its critics had wanted.

The airline has organized its current commercial strategy around four priorities: improving the customer experience, growing the global network, increasing premium revenue and strengthening its loyalty business.

The financial results show some early evidence of progress. In the second quarter of 2026, premium passenger unit revenue rose 13.4% year over year, compared with 8.8% growth in Main Cabin passenger unit revenue. Passenger revenue overall rose 15.9%.

American has also reported stronger corporate demand and continued investment in premium products. Those moves reflect a broader shift toward generating more revenue from higher-value customers rather than relying primarily on cost reduction.

This is the basis for the argument in View From The Wing that American is finally addressing what it describes as a revenue problem rather than treating the business mainly as a cost problem.

Photo: Cado Photo

Nat Pieper Represents Different Kind of Leadership Input

Nat Pieper is central to that shift because he joined American from outside the company’s existing leadership structure.

American appointed Pieper chief commercial officer effective November 2025. Before joining American, he was CEO of the oneworld alliance and previously held senior positions at Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines. At American, he oversees commercial strategy across loyalty, network planning, revenue management, sales and distribution, alliances, partnerships and other functions.

The original commentary gives Pieper particular credit for American’s recent commercial direction because he brought outside experience to a company whose senior management had been heavily shaped by executives from its legacy organizations.

That is an opinion about responsibility, not a measurable finding. In August 2026, the airline announced plans to restore seatback entertainment on narrow-body aircraft, with new aircraft receiving the system and more than 800 existing narrow-body aircraft scheduled for retrofit beginning in 2028. Reuters reported that the work is expected to continue into the early 2030s.

The reversal does not simply demonstrate that management changed its mind. It also shows why airline product decisions can be difficult and expensive to reverse.

Aircraft configurations, delivery schedules and maintenance programs mean that a decision made several years earlier can remain visible to customers for a long time.

The original commentary uses this history to argue that some of today’s passenger-experience problems are consequences of decisions made much earlier in Isom’s leadership tenure.

Photo: By Richard Silagi – Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=76300185

Starlink Adds Another Long-Term Product Investment

American’s connectivity strategy is also changing.

In May 2026, the airline announced plans to equip more than 500 narrow-body aircraft with Starlink Wi-Fi beginning in the first quarter of 2027. The initial announcement therefore represents a major rollout, but it is not the same as a commitment to complete Starlink installation across the entire narrow-body fleet by a specific date.

The original commentary uses the absence of a fully announced fleet-wide Starlink schedule as one example of what it sees as a lack of urgency. That remains an argument about the pace of execution rather than a factual finding about management’s intentions.

The broader product strategy is clearer. American is combining faster onboard connectivity with the return of seatback screens and an expansion of premium seating. Reuters reported that the airline plans to increase premium seating on narrow-body aircraft from roughly 25% to about 40%.

Photo: American Airlines 777 by Clément Alloing Compounded by Aviation A2Z

Profit Sharing Gives Pilots Direct Financial Interest

Pilot criticism also has a direct financial dimension.

Lower company profits can reduce profit-sharing payments to pilots and other eligible employees. Reuters reported in February 2026 that some American employees received profit-sharing payments as low as $150 following the airline’s weak financial results.

Profitability also matters during contract negotiations. A union seeking higher compensation has an incentive to argue that the airline’s financial weakness results from strategic or management decisions rather than simply from labor costs.

That helps explain why financial performance and leadership accountability are closely connected in the pilot union’s argument.

The union does not have to choose between seeking a stronger contract and criticizing management. Both objectives can exist within the same bargaining process.

Representative Photo: American Airlines (via Facebook)

Why APA Opened Contract Negotiations Early

The timing of the leadership criticism is particularly important because APA opened negotiations before the existing pilot agreement’s scheduled amendable date.

The current agreement was due to become amendable on August 1, 2027. APA said in August 2026 that American had not sufficiently implemented elements of the 2023 agreement and therefore invoked the contractual mechanism that allowed new negotiations to begin earlier.

APA’s bargaining position also calls for a seat on American’s board, according to reporting by View From The Wing. That proposal is notable because pilot representation already exists on the boards of Delta and United through their labor arrangements.

View From The Wing interprets these actions as evidence that the union has a bargaining incentive to emphasize management’s responsibility for poor financial performance. The argument is that if weak profits are framed primarily as a management problem, they become less persuasive as a reason to limit the value of a new pilot contract.

That interpretation should remain attributed to View From The Wing. The union’s public criticism by itself does not prove that contract strategy is its only or primary motivation.

Representative Photo: American Airlines

APA’s Internal ALPA Debate Adds Another Layer

The union also has an internal political issue that may affect its public posture.

The Allied Pilots Association has held discussions with the larger Air Line Pilots Association about a possible merger. View From The Wing reported that APA created a merger negotiating committee in 2025. The committee said in February 2026 that it saw no path to a deal, while the APA board directed it to reengage with ALPA in May.

That debate has also influenced APA leadership. View From The Wing reported that former APA President Ed Sicher was removed by the union’s board in October 2024 during a period of internal disagreement that included the ALPA issue.

Polling has shown declining support for a merger. Forbes reported in May 2026 that a University of New Hampshire survey of 901 pilots found that support had fallen in nine of the ten crew domiciles. Phoenix was the only domicile with support above 49%, at 50%.

The survey also found that more active APA members were more supportive of a merger than less-active members. APA subsequently changed the voting threshold for a potential merger from a majority of all eligible pilots to a majority of pilots who actually cast votes, according to View From The Wing.

These developments provide context for the union’s internal politics. They do not establish that APA’s criticism of American management is merely a product of the merger debate.

Photo: By Colin Brown Photography – https://www.flickr.com/photos/145232442@N02/47072084354/, CC BY 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=81315193

Employee Trust Remains a Separate Challenge

Customer experience is easier to measure than employee confidence, but the two issues are related.

American says it is working to improve its culture and make that culture a competitive advantage. The company currently employs about 130,000 people and has collective bargaining agreements covering its major represented workgroups.

APA, however, has argued that American’s operational and strategic problems have been persistent rather than isolated. Its public statements in 2026 have emphasized the airline’s financial underperformance and questioned whether management’s current plan can close the gap with competitors.

The Association of Professional Flight Attendants also issued a no-confidence vote in Isom in February 2026. That was a separate union action and does not demonstrate that every employee group holds the same view, but it shows that concerns about leadership extend beyond the pilot group.

For that reason, a leadership debate at American is partly about financial results and partly about credibility with frontline employees.

Photo: American Airlines

Case for an Outside CEO

The original commentary argues that an outside CEO could provide a clean break from earlier decisions and create an opportunity to rebuild employee trust.

That argument is different from saying that an outsider would automatically improve American’s financial performance. An incoming CEO would inherit the same aircraft, labor agreements, debt obligations, airport constraints and fuel exposure as the current management team.

The argument instead centers on organizational relationships. A leader who was not involved in earlier strategic disputes might be able to approach employees without the same history attached to previous decisions.

The original commentary identifies Nat Pieper as an example of the type of outside executive it views positively and mentions Air France-KLM CEO Ben Smith as another example of an airline executive associated by the author with employee trust. Both the company and its critics recognize that significant changes are underway.

The disagreement concerns when those changes should have started, how quickly they are being implemented and whether the current leadership should receive credit for them.

Management can point to record revenue, stronger premium performance, customer-experience improvements, network investment, new connectivity plans and the return of seatback entertainment.

Critics can point to the length of Isom’s involvement in senior leadership, American’s weaker profitability relative to Delta and United, the slow reversal of earlier product decisions and continuing employee dissatisfaction.

The fuel environment adds another challenge. Reuters reported on September 16, 2026 that American was reviewing capacity because the recent fuel-price surge had increased expected fourth-quarter fuel costs by about $1 billion. That makes the timing of the turnaround particularly important because stronger commercial performance can be partly offset by external cost pressure.

Photo: By Fabrizio Gandolfo – https://www.jetphotos.com/photo/8100832, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=43525690

Current Record Supports

American Airlines is not standing still. Record revenue has not translated into similarly strong earnings, and higher fuel costs are creating another challenge for the turnaround.

APA’s criticism therefore has a clear factual foundation in the union’s public record, even though View From The Wing offers a different interpretation of why the criticism has intensified now. The board has not announced a leadership change, while the company continues executing its current turnaround strategy.

Photo: By Venkat Mangudi – P1171058, CC BY 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=46460477

Bottom Line

The debate over Robert Isom is ultimately a debate over American Airlines’ past performance and its current turnaround.

The pilots’ union has questioned whether another leader could move the recovery faster, while View From The Wing argues that bargaining and internal union politics help explain the timing of that criticism.

American, meanwhile, is implementing many of the customer and commercial changes that critics had previously sought.

The strongest evidence will come from sustained results rather than individual announcements.

American needs to convert record revenue and higher-value customer demand into stronger margins while continuing to improve reliability, the onboard product and employee confidence.

The leadership question will remain part of that discussion as the airline moves through the next stage of its turnaround.

Stay tuned with us.
