Kenya Airways (KQ)<\/a> remains one of Africa’s most important airlines and serves as Kenya’s national carrier, connecting Nairobi with destinations across Africa, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. However, 2026 has been another challenging year for the airline, with fleet constraints, higher fuel costs, financial losses and an ongoing search for strategic investment shaping its outlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Captain George Kamal took over as Acting Group Managing Director and CEO in December 2025 after Allan Kilavuka left the position. Kamal had previously served as Kenya Airways’ Chief Operating Officer and brought nearly three decades of aviation leadership experience to the role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His tenure at the top has, however, been brief. Kenya Airways announced in September 2026 that Kamal was stepping down, with Habil Waswani appointed Acting Group Managing Director and CEO effective September 15, 2026. Kamal will remain with the airline through a transition period before his formal departure at the end of September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because Kamal served as acting CEO for only part of 2026 and Kenya Airways has not separately disclosed his individual CEO compensation<\/a>, his 2026 salary cannot be stated as a confirmed figure. Based on the latest disclosed executive pay at Kenya Airways, a reasonable estimate places his annualised compensation in the region of KSh 55 million to KSh 75 million, equivalent to approximately US$425,000 to US$580,000<\/strong>. Who is Kenya Airways CEO, George Kamal?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

George Kamal is an aviation executive and commercial pilot with more than 29 years of experience across Africa and the Middle East. He joined Kenya Airways in March 2023 as Chief Operating Officer after holding senior positions at other airlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before joining Kenya Airways, Kamal served as Operations Director at Air Arabia and Chief Operations and Executive Officer at Iraqi Airways. His career also includes experience as a captain and type-rating instructor at Etihad Airways and EgyptAir. He holds a Doctorate in Business Administration and a master’s degree in Aviation Management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kamal became Kenya Airways’ Acting Group Managing Director and CEO on December 16, 2025, following the departure of Allan Kilavuka. The appointment was initially intended as an interim arrangement while the board conducted a competitive search for a permanent CEO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his time as acting CEO, Kamal was responsible for overseeing the airline’s turnaround programme while dealing with aircraft availability problems, rising fuel prices and pressure on the company’s finances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
