NEW YORK\u2014<\/strong> A Delta Air Lines (DL)<\/a> Boeing 757-200 returned to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) <\/a>on Thursday morning after its crew reported a cabin pressurization issue during a flight to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flight DL791 safely landed back at JFK after the pilots declared an emergency and requested priority handling from air traffic control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft departed JFK shortly before 8:00 a.m. local time with 155 passengers and six crew members onboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was scheduled to operate a roughly five-hour service to Phoenix, but the reported pressure problem prompted the crew to turn the aircraft around and return to New York, where it landed shortly after 10:20 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crew followed established procedures after identifying the cabin pressurization issue and declared an emergency to receive priority treatment from air traffic control. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline has retained the aircraft for several decades because its combination of passenger capacity, performance, and range allows it to serve a wide variety of domestic and longer routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delta’s 757-200 fleet remains substantial, with 75 aircraft reported in service as of June 30, 2026. Those aircraft have an average age of 28.2 years<\/strong>, making the 757-200 one of the older aircraft types still operating across the carrier’s mainline fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the reported pressurization issue should not be treated as evidence that the age of DL791 caused the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aircraft technical issues can occur for different reasons, and the available information does not establish a connection between the aircraft’s age and Thursday’s event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delta has gradually reduced the number of Boeing 757-200s in its fleet while increasing deliveries of newer narrowbody aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline operated 100 757-200s in June 2022, compared with 75 in June 2026, while its Airbus A321neo fleet expanded significantly during the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Airbus A321neo<\/a> is positioned as an important replacement for the 757-200, offering Delta additional capacity and improved operating efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delta has also committed to Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft, giving the airline another option as it gradually modernizes its narrowbody fleet, Simple Flying<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
