DENVER\u2014<\/strong> United Airlines (UA)<\/a> has canceled a planned 9\/11 memorial flyover featuring a Boeing 777 and four F-16 fighter jets after concerns emerged over how the highly visible formation could affect the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flyover had been scheduled for Friday, September 11, at 9:03 a.m., matching the moment United Flight 175 struck the World Trade Center’s South Tower 25 years earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The planned tribute was part of private remembrance events for United employees at the airline’s Flight Training Center near Denver International Airport (DEN)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the ceremony was not open to the public, Denver officials had warned emergency services and residents because the passenger jet and military aircraft would have been visible and audible across parts of the metropolitan area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United Cancels Flyover over Denver<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

United confirmed on September 9 that it would suspend the aircraft flyover because of “concerns in the community.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline said it would continue with other planned memorial activities in Denver rather than proceed with the aerial tribute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original plan called for a United 777 to fly over the company’s training center while four F-16s<\/a> from the Colorado Air National Guard’s 120th Fighter Squadron accompanied it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The formation was intended as a tribute to the crews and employees lost during the September 11 attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Denver’s Office of Emergency Management had already begun preparing the public for the unusual sight. Officials described the planned display as highly visible and noticeable by sound, while emphasizing that it would not represent an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 9:03 AM Tribute Was Scheduled<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The timing was central to the planned memorial. United Flight 175 departed Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)<\/a> on September 11, 2001, before hijackers took control and flew the Boeing 767 into the South Tower at 9:03 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The planned Denver flyover would have recreated neither the aircraft type nor the original circumstances, but its combination of a large passenger aircraft and fighter jets carried obvious historical significance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Denver officials therefore sought to ensure that residents, police, firefighters, emergency dispatchers and other agencies understood what they might see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cancellation came after the city had begun broader preparations, including outreach intended to prevent unnecessary emergency calls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reports indicated that officials were particularly conscious of how a passenger aircraft escorted by fighter jets could be perceived on the anniversary of the attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United Keeps Memorial Plans<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The cancellation does not end United’s 25th-anniversary remembrance activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline plans to hold private events at its Flight Training Center and Denver International Airport, including the unveiling of a memorial made partly from steel recovered from the World Trade Center site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The monument will stand 9 feet 11 inches tall and honor the crews of United Flight 175 and United Flight 93. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

United also plans moments of recognition involving employees and airport personnel as part of its broader September 11 remembrance, Simple Flying<\/a> flagged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision leaves the flyover as a canceled element of what was otherwise intended to be a significant memorial program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

United will instead proceed with ground-based commemorations while avoiding the public reaction and operational coordination challenges surrounding the planned 777-and-F-16 formation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
