The activity began in 2017 and involved purchases made with cards that did not have sufficient funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Finnair Duty-Free Scheme Worked<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the time, Finnair operated an inflight duty-free program that allowed passengers to purchase products during flights. The airline also offered a pre-order service through which passengers could request specific items to be brought onto their flights for purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On flights without inflight connectivity, card payments could be taken onboard but were only processed once the aircraft was back on the ground and a connection was available. This created a delay between the purchase and the actual card processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seller was an English-speaking Estonian man. When the flight attendant asked about the watches, he reportedly claimed that they were customer returns received by Finnair and that he was selling them through a company that had acquired the products from the airline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The explanation appeared suspicious. The flight attendant also learned that more watches would soon be offered for sale and reported the matter to Finnair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police Questioned \u20ac11,096.68 in Orders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During questioning, police referred specifically to products ordered for flights with a total value of \u20ac11,096.68. The questioning stated that these products had been paid for with cards without sufficient funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man reportedly told police that he believed he had money available. He said that after making a purchase, he asked whether everything was fine and was told that it was. He also said he received a payment receipt and a purchase confirmation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finnish and Estonian Authorities Handled Case<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The legal case continued for years and required cooperation between authorities in Finland and Estonia. The proceedings finally concluded in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Helsinki Court of Appeals imposed a 4.5 month suspended prison sentence and more than \u20ac21,000 in fines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
