CHICAGO – <\/strong>United Airlines (UA)<\/a> is preparing to open two new flight attendant bases, expanding its domestic crew-base network to 10 locations. The airline has confirmed the planned expansion to newly hired cabin crew, but it has yet to reveal where the 2 bases will be located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement comes as United continues to expand its network and workforce. The carrier currently has major flight attendant bases at Newark (EWR)<\/a>, San Francisco (SFO), Chicago O\u2019Hare (ORD), Washington (IAD), Houston (IAH), Denver (DEN), Los Angeles (LAX)<\/a>, and Phoenix (PHX).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United Expands Flight Attendant Bases<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The 2 new locations would represent a significant expansion of United\u2019s flight attendant infrastructure at a time when the airline is training thousands of new employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United has more than 30,000 flight attendants, making efficient crew positioning increasingly important as the carrier adds flights and develops new markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newark remains United\u2019s largest flight attendant base, while San Francisco and Chicago also have thousands of lineholders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phoenix, by comparison, is a much smaller base, demonstrating that United does not necessarily restrict crew bases to its largest hub airports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline also maintains international crew operations in London and Guam. However, the two upcoming bases appear to be part of its broader US network rather than an expansion of its international crew infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Possible Base Locations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

United has not publicly identified the two cities, leaving considerable room for speculation among employees and aviation observers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miami, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Orlando and Atlanta have reportedly emerged as potential candidates, while Seattle and New York (JFK) have also been mentioned because United previously maintained bases there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miami could be particularly logical because United has identified the southeastern United States and South America as areas where it wants to grow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Establishing a local crew base could also reduce the need to accommodate flight attendants in hotels during overnight stays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United is already investing in Miami, adding infrastructure and expanding its presence at the airport. However, there is currently no confirmation that Miami will receive one of the two new bases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JFK Expansion Adds Clues<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

New York JFK is another possibility because United is preparing to return to the airport through its Blue Sky partnership with JetBlue Airways. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

JetBlue has agreed to provide United access to slots for up to seven daily round-trip flights from JFK Terminal 6 beginning as early as 2027, PYOK<\/a> flagged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United CEO Scott Kirby<\/a> has also indicated that the airline is exploring additional opportunities to increase its JFK presence, including potentially acquiring slots from other carriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That makes JFK a credible candidate, although United already operates its primary New York-area base from Newark and has a smaller operation at LaGuardia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For now, United is keeping the locations confidential. Until the airline formally announces the two bases, Miami, JFK and the other rumored airports should be treated as possibilities rather than confirmed destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
