DUBLIN\u2014<\/strong> Ryanair (FR)<\/a>, one of Europe\u2019s largest low-cost airlines, is cutting its winter flying plans as jet fuel prices approach $140 per barrel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The carrier has reduced its fiscal 2027 passenger target from 216 million to 214 million as it seeks to limit exposure to expensive fuel during the traditionally weaker winter season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reduction comes despite strong summer demand. Ryanair carried 22.2 million passengers in August, up 6% from a year earlier, while its load factor remained at 96%. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the airline expects passenger traffic between November and March to remain broadly flat as it reduces capacity on less profitable services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ryanair Cuts Winter Capacity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ryanair expects the capacity reduction to lower its winter losses by between \u20ac70 million and \u20ac100 million ($81 million and $116 million), depending on fares and passenger demand. The airline considers the November-to-March period its less profitable season and wants to avoid buying large quantities of fuel at elevated market prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fuel hedging provides Ryanair with some protection from the current spike. The airline has secured about 80% of its fiscal 2027 jet fuel requirements at approximately $67 per barrel, leaving only a portion of its needs exposed to prevailing market prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That difference has become increasingly important as jet fuel trades around $140 per barrel. Rather than maintaining capacity that could generate losses under those conditions, Ryanair is using its strong summer performance and fuel hedge position to limit its winter exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fuel Costs Threaten Fares<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ryanair has also warned that sustained high oil prices could affect airfares across Europe’s short-haul market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If elevated fuel costs continue into summer 2027, the airline expects fares to rise materially as carriers with weaker fuel protection struggle to maintain capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The warning reflects a wider pressure on European airlines. Fuel represents one of the largest variable costs for carriers, meaning a prolonged increase can quickly affect route profitability, particularly on short-haul flights where airlines operate with highly competitive fares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ryanair’s approach is therefore focused on protecting margins rather than simply maximizing passenger numbers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline expects another profitable financial year, although profit after tax is likely to fall below its record fiscal 2026 result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strong Summer Supports Outlook<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite the winter reductions, Ryanair continues to expand during the stronger summer period. The airline expects traffic between April and October to reach about 145 million passengers, representing growth of more than 5% from approximately 138 million during the comparable period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

August also demonstrated the strength of demand, with 22.2 million passengers carried and a 96% load factor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ryanair operated more than 120,500 flights during the month, although more than 400 were cancelled because of volcanic activity from Mount Etna, Simple Flying<\/a> flagged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline has already made wider network adjustments in response to costs and market conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ryanair has reduced capacity in several higher-cost markets and suspended routes, including services to Amman, Jordan, while its planned operations from Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) have been reduced from 17 cities to four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest strategy shows that Ryanair is prepared to sacrifice some winter traffic to protect profitability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If fuel prices eventually ease, the carrier will enter the next summer season with its low-cost model, high aircraft utilization, and strong demand positioned to support further growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
