MINNEAPOLIS\u2014<\/strong> A Delta Air Lines (DL)<\/a> Boeing 757-300 returned to Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) shortly after departure on August 31 after a first officer experienced a medical emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flight DL1208 was operating from Minneapolis to Orlando International Airport (MCO) when the crew interrupted the climb and requested priority handling from air traffic control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft, registered N586NW, carried 178 passengers and seven crew members. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)<\/a> confirmed that the aircraft landed safely in Minneapolis at about 11:50 a.m. local time after the pilot medical emergency, while Delta said its crew followed established procedures to return to the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delta Pilot Medical Emergency Disrupts Flight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Boeing 757 had only recently departed Minneapolis<\/a> when the flight crew stopped the climb at approximately 7,000 feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The captain informed air traffic control that the first officer could be potentially incapacitated and reported symptoms including chest pain, numbness in the arms and legs, and a rapid heartbeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crew declared a medical emergency and turned the aircraft back toward Minneapolis rather than continuing the planned flight to Orlando. Flight-tracking data shows the aircraft made a wide turn south of the airport before approaching for a landing on Runway 30L.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft landed safely and taxied clear, with emergency personnel standing by. Although tracking data showed a ground speed of around 160 knots during the landing, there was no reported accident or damage associated with the return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flight Delayed After Medical Emergency<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

DL1208 had already experienced a significant delay before the medical emergency disrupted the journey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After landing back at Minneapolis, the Boeing 757<\/a> remained at the airport while Delta arranged a replacement crew member so passengers could continue to Orlando.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft later resumed its journey and reached Orlando after the crew change. Flight-tracking records show the service eventually completed the Minneapolis-Orlando sector, with the disruption resulting in several hours of additional delay for passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delta confirmed that a pilot had experienced a medical issue but did not release further details about the crew member’s condition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline said its focus was on supporting the affected pilot and helping passengers continue their journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FAA Investigation Into Pilot Emergency<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The FAA said it would investigate the occurrence as part of its standard process for incidents involving a flight crew member. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agency’s preliminary statement identified the event as a pilot medical emergency and confirmed that the aircraft returned safely to Minneapolis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft involved, N586NW, is a Boeing 757-351 operated by Delta. FAA records identify it as a 2002-built aircraft with manufacturer serial number 32987, while flight-tracking records list it as an active Delta aircraft, The Aviation Hub<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the first officer’s medical emergency and review the crew’s response. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delta has not provided information on the pilot’s medical condition or whether the first officer will return to flight duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
