MUMBAI-<\/strong> Airport employees are facing growing uncertainty over a possible redistribution of flight operations as Mumbai\u2019s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) <\/a>prepares for major Terminal 1 redevelopment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A message circulating on social media claims that one-third of air traffic movements could move to Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI)<\/a> from October 1, 2026, although Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) has clarified that the message was not issued by the airport operator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reported change comes as the demolition of the old Terminal 1A building at Santacruz East nears completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The planned operational adjustments are expected to support the wider redevelopment of Terminal 1 while allowing Mumbai\u2019s airport network to continue handling flights during the construction period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The possible shift has raised concerns among ground handling, housekeeping and other airport employees who work around CSMIA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many workers live in areas such as Jari Mari and Vile Parle, meaning a regular commute to Navi Mumbai could create additional transport and housing challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Airport employees are particularly concerned because the proposed changes could affect their existing workplaces and daily travel arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While employment opportunities may remain available at Navi Mumbai International Airport, the greater distance from their homes could make the transition difficult for some workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The All India Airport Authority Employee Union in Mumbai<\/a> has also raised the issue with airport authorities. Union vice president Sanjiv Shah said discussions are taking place regarding employment opportunities for Mumbai airport employees if operations are transferred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traffic Shift Planned For October Operations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to the circulated timeline, one-third of air traffic movements from Mumbai airport could move to Navi Mumbai International Airport from October 1, 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reported schedule forms part of a broader operational transition linked to the redevelopment of Terminal 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A further change is expected later in October. From October 25, one-third of the flights currently operating from Terminal 1 are reportedly expected to move to Terminal 2, creating additional capacity while redevelopment plans progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
