LONDON\u2014<\/strong> easyJet (U2)<\/a> is seeing a significant shift in the age profile of its cabin crew as more older workers enter aviation, challenging the traditional perception that flight attendants are primarily a young person\u2019s career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline has reported that the number of cabin crew aged over 60 has almost quadrupled since 2022, while workers aged over 50 now account for 12% of its cabin crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of those employees is 61-year-old Andy Hampson, who joined easyJet after a career in corporate conferences and events was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based at London Gatwick Airport (LGW)<\/a>, Hampson began cabin crew training in February 2023 after responding to easyJet\u2019s recruitment campaign aimed at older applicants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Conferences to Cabin Crew<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hampson’s route into aviation was not conventional. Before joining easyJet, he worked in corporate conferences and events, an industry that suffered a severe downturn during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rapid adoption of video conferencing platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams also changed the events business. With traditional corporate gatherings disrupted, Hampson began considering what he could do next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aviation had always held some appeal for him. As a child, he had wanted to become a pilot, although that ambition never materialized into a career in the cockpit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opportunity came when he noticed easyJet was specifically encouraging people over 50 to consider joining its cabin crew. He applied without expecting to be successful, partly because he assumed his age would count against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, he was accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cabin Crew Is Physically Demanding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Age alone does not determine whether someone can become cabin crew. Applicants still have to meet the physical and safety requirements necessary to operate on commercial aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Hampson, the assessment included demonstrating the ability to lift passengers’ luggage into overhead lockers. Applicants must also demonstrate that they can swim, tread water for a specified period, and climb into a life raft without assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a firefighting component as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These requirements reflect the fundamental purpose of cabin crew. Although passengers may associate the job with hospitality, cabin crew are primarily responsible for safety and must be prepared to respond to emergencies in a confined and sometimes unpredictable environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Situational awareness is therefore just as important as physical fitness. Crew members must remain alert from the beginning of their shift until the aircraft returns to the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The working hours can also be demanding. Hampson was paid during his training, which helped make the career transition easier, but the job required him to become comfortable with very early starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Financial Trade-Off<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Changing careers at an older age can involve a difficult financial calculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hampson earns less as cabin crew than he did in his previous profession. For someone approaching retirement age, accepting a reduction in salary might appear counterintuitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, salary is only one part of the equation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The job provides benefits such as pension contributions, private healthcare and discounted travel, while the roster can create significant periods away from work. A typical pattern can involve several days of flying followed by three or four days off, although schedules vary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Hampson, the lifestyle benefits are particularly important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of measuring the job solely by its salary, he considers the variety of the work and the people he encounters. Each flight brings a different combination of passengers and colleagues, while destinations can change depending on the roster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experience Becomes an Advantage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the biggest advantages Hampson believes he has is something that cannot be taught during cabin crew training: life experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Passengers do not always behave predictably. Some are nervous about flying, others may become frustrated or upset, while excessive alcohol consumption can create another set of challenges for cabin crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hampson takes a conversational approach when dealing with difficult passengers. Rather than immediately treating an intoxicated passenger as a disciplinary problem, he tries to establish a personal connection and encourage them to moderate their behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That approach can be particularly useful when passengers are already stressed by travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His age can also help when reassuring nervous flyers. Hampson was once uncomfortable with flying himself and remembers gripping the armrest during flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A skydive in 2015 changed his perception of flying, and he now uses that experience when speaking with anxious passengers. Rather than simply repeating standard reassurance, he can draw on his own experience to explain why he eventually became comfortable in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Different Kind of Passenger Service<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cabin crew also encounter situations that have little to do with the formal safety demonstration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Families travelling with young children may need assistance during long periods in the cabin. Hampson said he sometimes suggests that parents walk their children around the galley or finds practical ways to help them settle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also the less pleasant aspects of the job. Passengers can become sick, children can cry and safety demonstrations can be ignored by people wearing headphones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hampson approaches these situations with what he describes as common sense rather than relying exclusively on a rigid script.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That does not mean ignoring procedures. Cabin crew remain bound by aviation regulations and airline policies, but interpersonal skills can determine how effectively those procedures are communicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His experience as a parent has also made some of the less glamorous parts of the job easier to handle. Cleaning up after an unwell passenger, for example, is unlikely to be particularly pleasant, but familiarity with children and family life can make such situations less intimidating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Appeal of Starting Again<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hampson’s story highlights a broader question about careers after 50: does changing direction become less worthwhile with age?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many workers, the answer may depend on what they value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A second career does not necessarily have to maximize earnings or lead to a conventional promotion ladder. It can instead provide a different working environment, new relationships, travel opportunities and a sense that professional life still has something new to offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Hampson, cabin crew work combines many of those elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He works with people from different backgrounds, visits different destinations and benefits from a roster that gives him considerable time away from work. He and his wife can also access discounted flights, making travel outside work more accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His experience demonstrates that aviation careers do not necessarily have to begin in early adulthood. The skills required to work in a cabin can be developed through training, but qualities such as patience, communication, confidence and judgment often come from years of experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The growing presence of older cabin crew also reflects a wider change in how airlines approach recruitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

easyJet has reported a sharp increase in the number of older people joining its cabin crew workforce. The number of employees aged over 60 has increased almost fourfold since 2022, while people over 50 now represent around 12% of its cabin crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That shift challenges the stereotype that cabin crew is a profession exclusively suited to younger workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Older employees can bring decades of experience dealing with customers, colleagues and difficult situations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may also have developed communication skills in industries far removed from aviation that can prove valuable when managing passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For passengers, a multigenerational cabin crew can offer a different experience too. Someone travelling with children may appreciate the perspective of a crew member who has raised a family, while an anxious passenger may find additional reassurance in speaking with someone who has experienced the same fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
