SINGAPORE-<\/strong> Singapore Airlines (SQ)<\/a> will bring First Class back to Christchurch Airport, Christchurch, New Zealand (CHC), from 1 May 2027, ending a 25 year absence on the route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline will replace the Airbus A350 Long Haul with a 4 class Boeing 777-300ER on the daily Singapore (SIN) to Christchurch (CHC) service, adding First Class and increasing Business Class and Premium Economy capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing 777-300ER Brings First Class Back to Christchurch<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Singapore Airlines has scheduled a 4 class Boeing 777-300ER<\/a> to replace the 3 class Airbus A350 Long Haul on its daily Christchurch service from 1 May 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft change restores a First Class cabin to New Zealand’s South Island for the first time since 2002. It also marks the Boeing 777-300ER’s debut as a regularly scheduled aircraft type on the Christchurch route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The change is notable beyond the New Zealand market. Christchurch becomes the longest route to receive a First Class cabin since Singapore Airlines introduced the Boeing 777-300ER on Amsterdam services earlier in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upgrade also increases total capacity from 253 seats on the A350 Long Haul to 264 seats on the 777-300ER. Most of the additional seats are in premium cabins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Singapore Airlines has served Christchurch for four decades. The airline’s inaugural flight, SQ388, arrived on 8 October 1986 using a Boeing 747-200. The service initially operated weekly and returned to Singapore via Auckland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frequency increased progressively as demand developed. The route moved to twice weekly operations in 1988, 3 times weekly in 1992, four times weekly in 1995 and five times weekly by the end of the 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daily service began in 2004, while seasonal supplementary flights were added from 2013 to cover the New Zealand summer peak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First Class was available on the route throughout its first 16 years. The Boeing 747-200 aircraft that launched the service carried First Class, as did the Boeing 747-300 and Boeing 747-400 aircraft that followed during the 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Airbus A340-300 also offered First Class after taking over the route in 1997.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First Class disappeared in 2002 when the 2 class Boeing 777-200ER became the main aircraft on the route. The Airbus A350 Long Haul replaced the 777-200ER from 7 January 2019 and introduced Premium Economy to Christchurch, but its highest cabin remained Business Class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 777-300ER will therefore restore First Class after a gap of approximately 25 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fleet history reflects a long-term shift from four-cabin aircraft to smaller premium configurations before Singapore Airlines restores First Class with the 777-300ER.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daily SQ297 and SQ298 Schedule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Singapore Airlines currently operates one daily flight in each direction between Singapore and Christchurch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 1 May 2027, SQ297 will continue to operate daily with the Boeing 777-300ER. SQ298 will transition to the same aircraft from 2 May 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
