The carrier already has one of the largest international networks among US airlines and plans to add more overseas routes.

United has expanded its international footprint in recent years with destinations including Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia (UBN), and Bilbao, Spain (BIO). The airline is expected to announce additional international routes as it continues targeting markets where it sees opportunities for growth.

Kirby also identified South America and the southeastern United States as important gaps in United’s network. Building a larger presence there would therefore put United directly into one of American’s strongest markets.

Kirby has described South America and the southeastern United States as difficult gaps to address on a stand-alone basis. The MAX 10 was originally expected to enter service much earlier.

The delay has left United with hundreds of lie-flat seats designed for the aircraft sitting in storage.

Kirby said the airline has a significant number of lie-flat seats that cannot simply be transferred to other aircraft because they do not fit the existing fleet.

The issue highlights the complexity of airline cabin planning. Premium seats are designed around specific aircraft dimensions, cabin layouts and installation requirements. A delay to an aircraft program can therefore affect not only fleet planning but also an airline’s product strategy.

Photo: Clément Alloing

United Adapts Airbus A321neo Aircraft

United has already found another way to use some of its premium cabin strategy while waiting for the MAX 10.

The airline has upgraded a group of Airbus A321neo aircraft with 20 Polaris suites, premium economy seats and redesigned interiors. American has also publicly rejected a merger proposal this year.

Kirby has made clear that any major transaction would require a willing partner. He has also indicated that United is not seeking to acquire a smaller carrier such as JetBlue.

The comments show that United’s merger ambitions are focused on adding significant scale rather than simply increasing the number of airlines under its control.

Kirby also argues that concerns about airline consolidation can overlook the differences between major carriers. Weather, airport capacity constraints, aircraft maintenance issues and other operational problems can quickly affect a large network.

United’s ability to improve reliability while expanding will therefore remain an important measure of whether its broader strategy succeeds.

Photo: Scott Kirby

Scott Kirby’s Long-Term United Airlines Strategy

Kirby’s strategy goes well beyond adding flights or aircraft. United is targeting additional airport access, new international markets, stronger premium revenue, artificial intelligence, and potentially major corporate combinations.

The delayed Boeing 737 MAX 10 remains a short-term complication, particularly because United has already invested in premium seats intended for the aircraft. The airline’s A321neo Coastliner strategy provides an interim solution for some of those products.

At JFK, United is seeking additional capacity through its planned partnership with JetBlue and potential slot opportunities. In international markets, the carrier is preparing additional routes while identifying South America and the southeastern United States as areas where it needs greater strength.

The merger question remains more uncertain because potential partners have resisted United’s approaches. Any future transaction would depend on a willing partner and regulatory considerations.

For now, United’s strategy is centered on organic expansion combined with selective opportunities to add scale. Kirby’s approach places the airline in a position to pursue growth across networks, premium cabins, technology and airport capacity while preparing for the next stage of competition in the US airline industry.

Stay tuned with us.
