Its expanding operation reflects the carrier’s wider strategy of building Istanbul Airport (IST) into a major global connecting hub, The Times reported.

Stansted has been particularly important to the recent expansion, while Heathrow handles a significant share of the airline’s widebody flying.

Adding London City would therefore be less about filling a capacity gap and more about reaching passengers in the financial districts of central London.

That location could make LCY attractive for premium and business travelers connecting through Istanbul to destinations across Europe, Asia and beyond.

The challenge, however, is finding an aircraft that can combine the airport’s demanding operating requirements with the distance to Istanbul.

Photo: By Aero Icarus from Zürich, Switzerland – Turkish Airlines Airbus A321-231; TC-JRM@FRA;06.07.2011/603fs, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=26716045

London City Aircraft Limits

London City currently requires aircraft to use a 5.5-degree final approach, compared with roughly 3 to 3.5 degrees at many other airports.

The steep descent, combined with the airport’s short runway, limits the number of aircraft types that can operate there.

The airport is seeking approval for a new 4.49-degree RNP-AR approach, which would be 1.01 degrees shallower.

The proposal specifically aims to enable newer, larger aircraft such as the Airbus A320neo to operate from LCY, with first flights possible no earlier than January 2027 if the regulatory process is completed.

That creates an unusual problem for Turkish Airlines. The carrier operates A319s, A320ceos and A321neos, but does not operate the A320neo in its mainline fleet, meaning the aircraft specifically highlighted by London City is not currently available to it.

Photo : Anna Zvereva | Wikimedia Commons | https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Turkish_Airlines,_TC-LCJ,_Boeing_737-8_MAX_(47585341702).jpg

Possible Turkish Solution

Turkish Airlines could potentially introduce a small A320neo sub-fleet through leases if the new approach receives approval.

This would provide a relatively direct way to establish an LCY operation without waiting for another aircraft type to receive the necessary technical and operational approvals.

Another possibility involves AJet, the group’s low-cost carrier, which already operates A320neos. However, AJet and Turkish Airlines are separate airlines with separate operating certificates, so simply transferring those aircraft to Turkish Airlines would not be an immediate solution.

The A321neo or Boeing 737 MAX 8 could eventually become alternatives if London City approves those types for the new approach, but neither currently offers a confirmed route into LCY. Range and payload would also matter because Istanbul would be a demanding sector from an airport with a short runway.

London City already supports the Embraer E195-E2, which became its largest aircraft when Helvetic Airways introduced the type in 2025.

Embraer has also highlighted Istanbul as a potential destination for the E195-E2 after further performance improvements, showing that the city pair is technically conceivable.

For Turkish Airlines, however, the question is not simply whether London City-Istanbul is possible. The airline must determine whether the commercial opportunity justifies securing an aircraft and operating model specifically suited to LCY.

Stay tuned with us.
