SYDNEY\u2014<\/strong> Sydney Airport (SYD)<\/a> has secured Australian Government approval for its Master Plan 2045, establishing a long-term framework for how the country\u2019s busiest airport will expand over the next two decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plan is designed to accommodate rising passenger demand while strengthening Sydney\u2019s role as a major international gateway for tourism, trade and investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The approved strategy projects Sydney Airport will handle more than 72 million passengers annually by 2045, with international traffic reaching 36.4 million passengers and domestic and regional traffic reaching 36.2 million. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airport also expects its annual economic contribution to rise to about $70 billion, while direct employment is forecast to exceed 105,000 jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Passenger Growth Forecast for 2045<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sydney Airport expects passenger volumes to increase substantially as international and domestic aviation demand continues to develop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Current planning forecasts indicate total annual passenger numbers could reach about 72.6 million by 2045, representing growth of roughly 75 percent from present levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International travel is expected to account for a larger share of the airport\u2019s traffic, rising from around 16 million passengers today to approximately 36.4 million by 2045<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Domestic and regional passenger numbers are also projected to increase, reaching about 36.2 million annually during the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airport expects this growth to support wider economic activity across New South Wales. Its planning documents also forecast annual airfreight volumes of around 1.4 million tonnes by 2045, more than double current levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Terminal Expansion Plans for the Future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A major element of Master Plan 2045 is the redevelopment of Sydney Airport\u2019s domestic precinct. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal would create a more integrated terminal environment by bringing domestic, regional and international services closer together, improving connections for passengers transferring between different types of flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airport\u2019s broader terminal development program<\/a> covers T1, T2 and T3, with additional capacity planned to accommodate future demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier plans outlined a major expansion linking the T2 and T3 domestic terminals, including up to 12 new international gates and two additional gates at T1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sydney Airport is also progressing upgrades aimed at improving passenger processing, terminal efficiency and ground access. These projects are intended to support higher traffic levels while maintaining operational performance during periods of strong demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Master Plan 2045 combines airport expansion with environmental planning through a five-year Airport Environment Strategy. The strategy focuses on reducing emissions, improving climate resilience and supporting more sustainable airport operations as infrastructure expands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ground transport also forms part of the long-term framework, with Sydney Airport planning improvements to road, public transport, walking and cycling connections around the airport precinct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wider planning approach also considers aircraft noise, environmental impacts and the airport\u2019s relationship with surrounding communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
