KUALA LUMPUR: All operationally active Malaysia Airlines (MH) <\/a>pilots have tested negative for drugs after Malaysia Aviation Group<\/a> completed the first phase of a mandatory screening programme on Aug. 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative follows heightened concern over substance misuse in aviation after a Malaysia Airlines pilot was arrested in Indonesia in connection with an alleged drug trafficking case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The screening covered pilots operating for Malaysia Airlines and forms part of broader measures introduced by Malaysia Aviation Group to strengthen safety and fitness for duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme follows the arrest of a 39-year-old pilot after Malaysia Airlines flight MH727 arrived at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) in Jakarta, where authorities allegedly found more than 70,000 ecstasy pills in his luggage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malaysia Airlines Drug Screening Program Measures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Malaysia Aviation Group said all operationally active Malaysia Airlines pilots had completed the mandatory tests, with every result returning negative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company will now extend the programme to cabin crew as it continues to apply the same screening standards across its operational workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Screening for about 2,840 cabin crew members is scheduled to begin on Aug. 18 and will be progressively expanded. Malaysia Aviation Group expects the cabin crew testing phase to be completed by Sept. 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Group president and chief executive officer Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar described the completion of pilot screening as an important milestone while stressing that the company\u2019s safety measures would continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the group would apply rigorous standards across its airlines and strengthen safeguards to maintain operational standards and passenger confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Firefly Screening Continues Across Operations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The enhanced testing programme is also underway at Firefly (FY), covering both pilots and cabin crew. As of Aug. 15, more than half of Firefly\u2019s 158 pilots and 163 cabin crew members had completed screening, with all results reported so far returning negative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malaysia Aviation Group expects Firefly to complete testing of its remaining operational staff by Aug. 25. The target is earlier than the Sept. 5 deadline established by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group also plans to maintain random drug testing through its Safety and Health team while continuing cooperation with aviation and law enforcement authorities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These measures add to existing fitness for duty requirements, including pre-employment screening, medical certification, recurrent training, periodic alcohol and drug testing, pre-flight compliance checks and crew fitness assessments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jakarta Drug Case Sparks Scrutiny<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The expanded screening follows the arrest of a Malaysia Airlines pilot in Indonesia on July 28 after he arrived from Kuala Lumpur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indonesian authorities said customs officers found 70,114 ecstasy pills weighing about 25 kilograms, along with methamphetamine, in luggage linked to the suspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities also reported that the pilot tested positive for MDMA, methamphetamine and cocaine. Investigators said he allegedly admitted to transporting drugs on previous occasions and claimed he had been offered RM50,000 to deliver the shipment to Jakarta. NST<\/a> reported<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case prompted regulatory scrutiny in Malaysia, with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia examining the incident from a regulatory perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malaysia Aviation Group\u2019s wider screening programme represents a significant expansion of its substance misuse controls as the group seeks to reinforce safety and public confidence across its airlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
