Instead, the Airbus A330-900neo, aircraft N410DZ, diverted to London Heathrow (LHR) after a reported lavatory leak and later stopped at New York JFK for a crew change.

Passengers reported liquid spreading across the cabin floor, blankets covering the wet aisle, strong odors and limited food during the disruption. Passengers said a lavatory had already been worked on before departure.

The aircraft declared an emergency to air traffic control while approaching Heathrow because it was too heavy to land with the fuel needed for the planned transatlantic flight. Airbus A330-900neos do not generally dump fuel.

At Heathrow, passengers said they remained onboard while the cabin was cleaned. A family member of 3 passengers provided photos and a 7-second video showing Delta blankets covering sections of the aisle near the lavatory.

The exact liquid was not confirmed. A lavatory leak can involve waste, but it can also come from a water line, sink, or drain.

Passengers said the leak spread onto the cabin carpet and that cleaning fumes and odors made conditions difficult.

They also said the original meals were considered spoiled and discarded. Replacement catering was not loaded at Heathrow, so passengers were told that packaged snacks would be provided.

The aircraft was not kept at the gate longer than needed to address the lavatory issue. A longer stop for replacement catering could have added further delay, while passengers would also have faced immigration requirements if they wanted to leave the airport area to buy food.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" passengers could be entitled to €600 each because the flight was more than 3,500 kilometers and arrived at least 4 hours late, unless Delta could establish extraordinary circumstances.

With 209 passengers onboard, the reported potential liability was $144,628, or about $144,500.

The report also noted that many passengers may not know to request compensation and that Delta was expected to contact customers with an apology and compensation.

Similar Lavatory Incidents

Lavatory-related problems have caused other long-haul disruptions. On an American Airlines flight from Delhi to New York, passengers reported flooded lavatories and blankets covering the affected aisle. American said it was a small leak from a clogged toilet.

Delta also turned around an Atlanta-Barcelona flight after diarrhea spread through the cabin, cleaned the aircraft, replaced the crew and continued eight hours late. Passengers deplaned during that cleanup.

More recently, a Delta flight approaching San Francisco experienced a lavatory-area flood. As noted in the original report, a lavatory flood does not necessarily mean sewage.

Photo: Andrew E. Passengers faced the cleanup at Heathrow, loss of the original catering, and a second diversion because the original crew reached its duty limits.

The combination turned a scheduled nonstop Paris-Seattle flight into a journey of nearly 20 hours.

Stay tuned with us.
