The strikes also contributed to the overnight shutdown of Lufthansa CityLine.

Although formal strikes have stopped for now, contract negotiations remain ongoing, so further industrial action cannot be ruled out. Lufthansa management now appears more willing to acknowledge that its approach to labor relations needs to change.

Lufthansa Chief Human Resources Officer Michael Niggemann said the company needs to “talk with each other again, instead of about each other.” He also said the goal should be to resolve current collective bargaining disputes while building a stronger basis for cooperation in the years ahead.

The clearest practical step is a framework for resolving labor disputes through arbitration. The pilots’ union has indicated that negotiations should be used to find solutions rather than relying on industrial action.

Representative Photo: Lufthansa

Lufthansa’s Labor Problem Goes Beyond Pay

Lufthansa’s labor disputes have largely centered on weak trust and cooperation between management and unions.

The airline is also the lowest-margin carrier within Lufthansa Group despite being its flagship airline.

Management argues that Lufthansa’s labor contracts are too expensive, which encourages the group to create new subsidiaries with lower costs.

Unions present the opposite argument. Before Ben Smith took over Air France-KLM in 2018, labor relations at Air France were extremely difficult, including severe protests and repeated industrial action. Since Smith’s arrival, the airline has taken a much more cooperative approach toward employees.

Smith has emphasized respect for employees, stronger management-worker cooperation and strategic investments in workforce conditions. One of his early decisions was to eliminate low-cost carrier Joon and move its employees onto Air France contracts with better pay.

That approach contrasts sharply with Lufthansa Group’s use of subsidiaries as a way to reduce labor costs. The difference suggests that management and employees do not necessarily have to treat each other as opposing sides when both ultimately want the airline to succeed.

OMAAT also highlighted this contrast between Lufthansa’s long-running labor problems and Air France’s improved relationship with employees.

Photo: Lufthansa

Could Air France Be Influencing Lufthansa?

Lufthansa has not publicly said that Air France is responsible for its new labor strategy.
