LONDON-<\/strong> Virgin Atlantic (VS)<\/a> has started cancelling a significant number of flights between London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN), just months after launching the long-awaited South Korea route. The reductions begin in late November and become more extensive from December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move comes despite Virgin Atlantic’s (VS) strategic interest in maintaining the Heathrow (LHR) to Seoul (ICN) service, as the airline must continue operating the route for three years to retain valuable airport slots acquired through the Korean Air (KE) and Asiana Airlines (OZ) merger process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virgin Atlantic Reduces London to Seoul Operations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Virgin Atlantic has begun cutting its London Heathrow (LHR)<\/a> to Seoul Incheon (ICN) schedule following reports of weaker-than-expected passenger demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline launched the South Korean route earlier this year after a lengthy delay, marking its return to Northeast Asia with daily nonstop flights. However, booking patterns appear to have fallen short of expectations, prompting the carrier to revise its winter schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first cancelled service is scheduled for December 8, 2026<\/strong>. From that date, Virgin Atlantic has cancelled every alternate flight, effectively reducing operations by 50%<\/strong> from the originally planned daily frequency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flight availability also indicates that changes begin even earlier. From November 25, 2026<\/strong>, some remaining flights are only available for booking in Economy<\/strong> and Upper Class<\/strong>, while Premium<\/strong> cabin availability has disappeared on several dates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This pattern suggests the airline may be simplifying passenger reaccommodation should additional schedule adjustments become necessary, HfP<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Korean Air Partnership Provides Passenger Flexibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Virgin Atlantic is a member of the SkyTeam alliance and has an extensive partnership with Korean Air (KE)<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because Korean Air continues to operate daily services between London Heathrow (LHR) and Seoul Incheon (ICN), Virgin Atlantic can more easily transfer affected passengers onto its partner airline when required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Limiting cabin availability on selected Virgin Atlantic flights could reduce operational complexity if further cancellations occur. Although the airline has not announced additional reductions, the booking pattern has prompted speculation that more adjustments remain possible during the winter season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At present, Virgin Atlantic’s booking system shows a return to daily operations from March 1, 2027<\/strong>, with all cabins available for sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heathrow Slot Rules Remain a Major Factor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Seoul route carries strategic importance beyond passenger demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virgin Atlantic obtained the Heathrow (LHR) slots through regulatory remedies linked to the merger between Korean Air (KE) and Asiana Airlines (OZ)<\/a>. Competition authorities required Korean Air to release slots to preserve competition on the London to Seoul market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the agreement, Virgin Atlantic must continue operating the Heathrow to Seoul service for three years<\/strong> to retain those slots permanently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the airline withdraws from the route before meeting that commitment, the slots could be reassigned to another airline willing to operate services between London Heathrow and Seoul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heathrow slots remain among the most valuable aviation assets globally, with individual slot pairs often estimated to be worth more than \u00a320 million<\/strong>, depending on market conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seoul Route Continues to Face Market Challenges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

South Korea has historically been a challenging long haul market for UK airlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While leisure travel between the two countries has grown steadily, business travel demand has generally been lower than on other major Asian routes. That has made it difficult for airlines to consistently achieve the premium cabin demand needed to support daily long haul operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virgin Atlantic’s latest schedule reductions reflect those commercial realities while allowing the airline to continue serving the market and preserve its long-term strategic position at Heathrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether passenger demand improves over the coming months will likely determine if the airline restores the cancelled frequencies before the summer 2027 schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
