HONOLULU-<\/strong> Former flight attendant Dallas Pokornik has pleaded guilty to wire fraud after admitting that he used a fake airline employee ID to obtain hundreds of free flights from 3 major US airlines <\/a>over nearly 5 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scheme exploited employee travel benefits, commonly known as non-revenue or \u201cnon-rev\u201d travel, which allow eligible airline staff to fly for free or at heavily reduced fares when seats are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case centered on airlines based in Honolulu, Chicago and Fort Worth. The carriers correspond to Hawaiian Airlines (HA)<\/a>, United Airlines (UA)<\/a> and American Airlines (AA)<\/a>, with their respective major bases in Honolulu (HNL), Chicago (ORD) and Fort Worth (DFW).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pokornik had previously worked as a flight attendant for a Toronto-based airline between 2017 and 2019, giving him knowledge of how airline employee travel systems operated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fake Pilot Identity Scheme Revealed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After leaving his flight attendant position, Pokornik admitted that he continued using fraudulent credentials to present himself as an eligible airline employee. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prosecutors said he falsely represented himself as a pilot and used a fictitious employee identification badge to access travel privileges that were not available to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The admitted scheme ran from January 2020 through October 2024. During that period, Pokornik obtained hundreds of flights without paying the normal passenger fare, turning his former industry knowledge into a long-running fraud operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also sought access to cockpit jumpseats when regular passenger seats were unavailable. Jumpseats are subject to strict eligibility requirements and are generally reserved for authorized aviation personnel, making the requests particularly significant in the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scheme Exposed Through Fake Credentials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The fraud began to unravel in 2024 when Pokornik presented his fake pilot identification to an employee at one of the airlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The employee became suspicious of the badge, photographed it and reported the concern, eventually leading investigators to establish that Pokornik was not the pilot he claimed to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities later traced Pokornik to Panama, where he was arrested before being extradited to the United States. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US Attorney\u2019s Office in Hawaii and Homeland Security Investigations handled the investigation, with assistance from international law enforcement partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case drew comparisons to \u201cCatch Me If You Can,\u201d the story of Frank Abagnale, who famously posed as an airline pilot while committing fraud. However, Pokornik\u2019s case involved a specific airline employee travel system and resulted in federal wire-fraud charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guilty Plea And Sentence Timeline<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Following his guilty plea, Pokornik now faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000. His sentencing is scheduled for December 8, 2026, when the court will also determine the amount of restitution owed to the 3 airline victims, PYOK<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US Attorney Ken Sorenson said travel security protocols are designed to protect passengers, employees and visitors, adding that those who breach such systems should expect legal consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pokornik has agreed under his plea agreement to repay the airlines, with the final restitution amount to be established at sentencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
