The aircraft carried the letters “TA” on the forward landing gear door, leading Cawby to identify it as Lufthansa registration D-ABTA.

Although no manufacturer’s serial number was visible in the photograph, aviation databases and enthusiast forums have long associated D-ABTA with production serial number 1638. If correct, the aircraft would be the 13th Boeing 777X ever built.

Production records indicate the earliest aircraft in the program included one prototype that was later scrapped, four active flight test aircraft, five aircraft originally intended for Emirates (EK), two for ANA All Nippon Airways (NH), followed by Lufthansa’s presumed first aircraft, D-ABTA.

Industry observers believe Lufthansa could ultimately receive as many as six of these early-built aircraft, provided they undergo the required modernization work before delivery.

Photo: Clément Alloing

Newer Aircraft Already Flying

The first Boeing 777-9 officially confirmed by Boeing for Lufthansa was not D-ABTA but another aircraft with manufacturer serial number 1781, registered as D-ABTG.

This aircraft completed its maiden flight in May 2026 and became the first production Boeing 777X to fly.

Between registrations D-ABTA and D-ABTG are five additional Lufthansa aircraft expected to carry registrations ending in B, C, D, E, and F.
