DALLAS-<\/strong> Chicago O’Hare Airport (ORD)<\/a> is one of the world’s busiest airports by aircraft movements, while Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) consistently leads global rankings for passenger traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Southwest Airlines (WN)<\/a> ended its 5-year operation at O’Hare in June 2026 and consolidated its Chicago services at Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than reducing its presence in Chicago, Southwest shifted operations to Midway as part of a broader network optimization strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Southwest Airlines Operations At Chicago Midway<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Southwest Airlines announced in March 2026 that it would discontinue service at Chicago O’Hare International Airport from June 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision formed part of the airline’s ongoing effort to refine its network by concentrating flights at airports where it already has stronger operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to reporting by NBC at the time, O’Hare’s large scale and operational complexity made it less efficient for Southwest than Chicago Midway, where the airline has maintained a significant presence for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, Southwest also announced plans to end service at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similar to its Chicago strategy, the airline chose to concentrate Washington-area operations through Baltimore\/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Southwest explained the decision in an official statement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of Southwest’s ongoing efforts to refine its network, the company will discontinue service to Chicago O’Hare. These changes do not represent any significant changes in availability, as we will continue our robust service at Chicago Midway.”<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The announcement confirmed that Southwest was not reducing service to Chicago. Instead, the airline was strengthening its existing Midway operation by consolidating flights at a single airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Southwest Airlines served Chicago O’Hare International Airport from 2021 until June 2026. The airline entered the airport during the aviation industry’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, when changing market conditions created opportunities to expand into airports that had previously offered limited access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to historical scheduling data from aviation analytics company Cirium, Southwest operated 6,921 scheduled departures from O’Hare during 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Operations expanded significantly during the following two years before gradually declining as the airline prepared to leave the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
