DUBAI-<\/strong> An Emirates (EK)<\/a> passenger who admitted committing an indecent act during a flight from Dubai International Airport (DXB) to Newcastle International Airport (NCL) has avoided a prison sentence after being handed a community order by a UK court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident occurred on an Emirates Boeing 777 flight in June 2025, where a mother travelling with her infant reported the passenger’s behaviour to cabin crew before the aircraft landed at Newcastle International Airport (NCL). The case concluded after the defendant’s guilty plea remained in place despite an attempt to withdraw it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Court Upholds Guilty Plea in Emirates Flight Incident<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Britto Lorence, 27, from Middlesbrough, appeared before Newcastle Magistrates’ Court after being charged with outraging public decency following the incident aboard the long-haul Emirates service from Dubai (DXB)<\/a> to Newcastle (NCL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to prosecutors, Lorence was seated beside a woman travelling with her young son. During the flight, the woman got up to feed her child and noticed Lorence sitting with a blanket and pillow over his lap. She initially feared he was concealing a weapon before realizing he was exposing himself and performing a sexual act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The woman immediately alerted the cabin crew, who responded to the complaint. Upon arrival at Newcastle International Airport, Northumbria Police arrested Lorence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The defendant initially pleaded not guilty and the matter was scheduled for trial. However, on the day the trial was due to begin in May 2026, he changed his plea to guilty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hearing was then adjourned so that the court could obtain a pre-sentence report before deciding on an appropriate punishment, Chronicle Live<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attempt to Withdraw Plea Rejected<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before sentencing, Lorence applied to withdraw his guilty plea, claiming he had been pressured into admitting the offence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

District Judge Kate Meek rejected the application, ruling that the guilty plea would stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While delivering the sentence, Judge Meek described the offence as serious because it occurred in the confined environment of a commercial aircraft where passengers had no opportunity to leave the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The judge also noted that one of those seated next to Lorence was a very young child, making the impact on the victims even more significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The court heard that although Lorence eventually pleaded guilty, his later attempt to overturn the plea limited the amount of credit he received during sentencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
