CHICAGO-<\/strong> United Airlines (UA)<\/a> has started replacing its iconic transparent blue plastic cups with recyclable paper cups across its network, beginning with international services and United Express flights. The rollout marks another step in the carrier’s effort to reduce onboard single-use plastics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The transition began on August 1, 2026, with expansion to all mainline domestic flights from October 1. The Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) based carrier says the new universal cup supports both hot and cold beverages while helping reduce plastic waste across its operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United Introduces Universal Paper Cups Across Its Network<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

United Airlines has officially launched a fleetwide transition from its long-used transparent blue plastic cups to a newly designed recyclable paper cup capable of serving both hot and cold beverages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rollout began on August 1, 2026<\/strong>, covering all international flights and United Express services. The airline plans to introduce the new cups across all mainline domestic flights beginning October 1, replacing separate paper cups for hot beverages and plastic cups for cold drinks with a single universal design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United first announced work on the project in 2025 after assembling a cross-functional team to develop a cup that could safely handle coffee<\/a>, tea, water, soft drinks, juice, and alcoholic beverages without affecting onboard service standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The universal approach simplifies cabin service by allowing flight attendants to use the same cup for every beverage served onboard, Live and Let’s Fly<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Cup Expected to Remove 250 Million Plastic Cups Every Year<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to United, the new cup consists of two paper layers with a water-based interior coating instead of conventional plastic or wax linings found in many disposable paper cups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline says the design is both recyclable and compostable while remaining compatible with its existing mixed-material recycling systems on domestic flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United estimates the transition will eliminate approximately 250 million single-use plastic cups annually<\/strong>, preventing around 1,260 metric tons of plastic waste<\/strong> from entering the waste stream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To illustrate the scale, the airline says the plastic reduction is roughly equal to the weight of 13.5 Airbus A321neo aircraft<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
