AUCKLAND\u2014<\/strong> The British Airline Pilots\u2019 Association (BALPA) has warned flight crews about a potentially catastrophic mechanical defect involving Airbus aircraft after two separate in-flight engine shutdown incidents raised concerns about cockpit safety systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The warning follows an Air New Zealand (NZ)<\/a> Airbus A320neo incident near Auckland Airport (AKL) <\/a>in December 2024 and a later British Airways (BA) Airbus A350-1000 event during a transatlantic flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pilots\u2019 union says the issue involves the engine fire shutoff button, a critical cockpit control designed to isolate an engine only during emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although European regulators have already ordered inspections on affected Airbus A320 family aircraft, BALPA believes a similar problem may also exist on Airbus A350 aircraft, prompting fresh concerns across the aviation industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Airbus Engine Shutdown Risk Under Investigation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The warning stems from an incident involving an Air New Zealand Airbus A320neo carrying 142 passengers and six crew members. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

About 15 minutes after departure, one engine unexpectedly shut down after the engine fire shutoff button activated without being touched by either pilot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crew declared a Mayday and safely managed the emergency. Investigators later found that a retaining pin inside the fire shutoff button mechanism had been bent during installation, allowing normal aircraft vibration to trigger the switch during flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the investigation, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)<\/a> issued an emergency Airworthiness Directive requiring operators of affected Airbus A319, A320, and A321 aircraft to inspect the engine fire shutoff button assembly and replace defective units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Airlines have until November 2027 to complete the required inspections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

BA Flight Incident Under Investigation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

BALPA says a similar event occurred in February when a British Airways Airbus A350-1000<\/a> was operating a scheduled service from Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) to London Heathrow Airport (LHR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the union, the aircraft was cruising over Halifax, Canada, while the captain was taking a scheduled rest break. The remaining pilots suddenly faced an engine power loss after the right-hand engine shut down unexpectedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cockpit warning messages appeared briefly but did not immediately indicate a complete engine shutdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the captain returned to the flight deck, the crew consulted maintenance control, pushed the fire switch back into its normal position, and successfully restarted the engine in flight before continuing safely to London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The accident report for the British Airways incident has not yet been published, meaning investigators have not officially confirmed that the same mechanical fault caused the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety Concerns Grow After Incidents<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

BALPA believes both incidents highlight a latent mechanical defect that could remain undetected until an engine unexpectedly shuts down during flight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The union noted that pilots receive very few indications before the fire shutoff button activates, especially during night operations when cockpit lighting is reduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Air New Zealand event, the flight crew reportedly heard a distinctive clicking sound as the switch activated, providing one of the few warning signs before the engine shut down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The engine fire shutoff button is intended only for confirmed engine fire emergencies. Once activated, it cuts fuel supply, isolates electrical systems, and closes the engine bleed air valve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fire extinguishing agents are deployed only after pilots receive additional ECAM instructions confirming signs of an engine fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although EASA’s directive currently applies only to certain Airbus A320-family aircraft, BALPA argues that similar engine fire control panels installed on Airbus A350 aircraft deserve closer regulatory attention, PYOK<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The union has urged continued monitoring until investigators determine whether the same underlying defect exists across multiple Airbus fleets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
