These unique flight profiles require close coordination with air traffic control, particularly at busy airports such as Haneda.

The aircraft involved, registered JA010G and operating under the callsign “Checkstar 10,” has served in Japan’s flight inspection program since 2015. Ironically, an aircraft assigned to verify aviation safety systems became part of a serious operational incident.

Photo: Montague Smith | Wikimedia Commons |

Safety Investigation Underway After Incident

The near-miss is expected to receive significant attention because Haneda remains under close scrutiny after the January 2024 collision between a Japan Airlines Airbus A350 and a Japan Coast Guard Dash 8, which claimed five lives aboard the Coast Guard aircraft, Simple Flying flagged.

Although Tuesday’s event occurred in the air rather than on the runway, investigators will examine controller instructions, radar data, aircraft positions, and crew communications to determine why standard separation was not maintained.

They will also review the TCAS activation and the evasive actions taken by both flight crews.

The successful response by the onboard collision-avoidance system prevented what could have become a major aviation accident, reinforcing the importance of multiple safety layers in modern air traffic operations.

Authorities have not yet released preliminary findings, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Stay tuned with us.
