LONDON-<\/strong> British Airways (BA)<\/a> has closed its premium lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) for a major refurbishment that will introduce the airline’s latest Global Lounge Concept. The upgraded facility is expected to reopen in summer 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investment comes as British Airways (BA) marks 80 years of transatlantic services between London and New York, while also advancing its Airbus A380 cabin refurbishment program and expanding Starlink WiFi installation across parent company IAG’s long-haul fleet, HfP<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

British Airways Modernises Newark<\/a> Premium Lounge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

British Airways has begun a comprehensive $15 million refurbishment<\/strong> of its Galleries Lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)<\/strong> in New Jersey. The lounge has temporarily closed and is scheduled to reopen during summer 2027<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project introduces the airline’s Global Lounge Concept<\/strong> to Newark, making it the third location to receive the new design after lounges in Dubai International Airport (DXB)<\/a><\/strong> and Miami International Airport (MIA)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The refurbishment also aligns with a significant milestone for the airline. British Airways is celebrating the 80th anniversary<\/strong> of its London to New York operations. On July 1, 1946, BOAC, British Airways’ predecessor, operated its first commercial landplane service using a Lockheed Constellation L-049<\/strong>, flying from London to LaGuardia Airport (LGA)<\/strong> via refueling stops at Shannon and Gander. The journey took nearly 20 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, New York remains British Airways’ largest long-haul market. The airline operates 11 daily flights<\/strong> between London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and the New York metropolitan area, including two daily services to Newark (EWR)<\/strong>. Heathrow to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)<\/strong> is widely regarded as one of the world’s most valuable international airline routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Design Inspired by New Jersey and British Heritage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

British Airways is once again working with global architecture firm Gensler<\/strong> to redesign the Newark lounge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the airline, the new interior draws inspiration from New Jersey’s coastline and industrial heritage<\/strong>, while incorporating signature British Airways design elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early design images show a more understated appearance than the Dubai and Miami lounges. Instead of heavy gold finishes, the Newark lounge features warmer wood textures, blue accents, and contemporary furnishings that create a modern yet refined atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
