British Airways is celebrating the 80th anniversary of its London to New York operations. On July 1, 1946, BOAC, British Airways’ predecessor, operated its first commercial landplane service using a Lockheed Constellation L-049, flying from London to LaGuardia Airport (LGA) via refueling stops at Shannon and Gander. The journey took nearly 20 hours.

Today, New York remains British Airways’ largest long-haul market. The airline operates 11 daily flights between London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and the New York metropolitan area, including two daily services to Newark (EWR).
