WASHINGTON, D.C.-<\/strong> The US State Department<\/a> has made its visa bond programme permanent after concluding that the pilot scheme helped reduce visa overstays. The updated regulation allows consular officers to require eligible applicants to post a bond of up to $20,000<\/strong> before receiving a US visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rule takes effect on August 3 following its publication in the Federal Register. While the programme currently covers citizens of 50 countries, India is not included, meaning Indian applicants for US B-1 (Business) and B-2 (Tourist) visas are not affected at this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US Expands Permanent Visa Bond Policy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The US State Department introduced the visa bond programme as a pilot initiative in 2025 to discourage visa<\/a> overstays by requiring certain applicants to provide a refundable financial bond before a visa was issued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following a year-long evaluation, the department concluded that the programme successfully encouraged travelers to comply with the conditions of their stay in the United States. Based on those findings, the programme has now been adopted as a permanent immigration measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The permanent visa bond programme currently applies only to applicants from 50 designated countries seeking B-1 business visas or B-2 tourist visas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among South Asian countries included in the programme are Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. However, India<\/a> is not on the current list of participating countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, Indian citizens applying for B-1 or B-2 visas do not have to pay a visa bond under the new regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The State Department has also indicated that additional countries may be added to the programme in the future. While no timeline has been announced, the policy allows the department to expand coverage if considered necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
