SINGAPORE\u2013<\/strong> A former Singapore<\/a> Armed Forces (SAF) captain has been sentenced to 21 months and two weeks in jail after cheating five colleagues out of more than S$86,000<\/strong> while exploiting his position of authority to normalize vaping within a military workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case has drawn attention to financial misconduct and abuse of rank inside the armed forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 38-year-old former officer, Benjamin Song Yong Pang, was also fined S$6,000<\/strong> after pleading guilty to five cheating charges and four offences linked to e-vaporisers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prosecutors said many of the victims were his subordinates, while investigators also found he enlisted junior personnel to procure prohibited vaping products for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Financial Fraud by the Former Singapore Army Captain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Song had accumulated substantial credit card<\/a> debt between 2011 and 2018 through frequent visits to Thai clubs and KTV establishments, according to court records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While serving as a deputy cluster commander at an SAF supply base, he later began approaching colleagues for money under false pretences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between May 2021 and March 2024, he repeatedly claimed the funds would either be invested on their behalf or used to pay for his mother’s medical treatment. Instead, investigators found the money was diverted to cover his own debts and personal expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across more than 39 separate occasions, five colleagues handed him a combined S$86,750. Individual losses ranged from S$10,000 to S$27,050<\/strong> before the scheme was uncovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Song has since repaid the victims in full, the court ruled that the deception was deliberate and sustained over nearly three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vape Culture in Singapore Armed Forces<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Separate investigations revealed that Song began using e-vaporisers around late 2021 and openly vaped inside his office at Nee Soon Camp. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities said his conduct created an environment where vaping became normalized among junior personnel despite Singapore’s strict prohibition on such products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Health Sciences Authority found that Song repeatedly leveraged his senior rank to persuade three subordinates to order vape devices and pods on his behalf, then passed the products to him. One subordinate later admitted assisting only because he feared refusing a superior officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigators also determined that Song introduced one female colleague to vaping by giving her a vaping device and supplying vape pods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prosecutors said the purchases were primarily made to consolidate orders and reduce delivery costs rather than for resale, but the conduct nevertheless breached Singapore’s vaping laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On July 29, the court sentenced Song to 21 months and two weeks’ imprisonment together with a S$6,000 fine after he admitted to the cheating and vaping offences, Straits Times<\/a> flagged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additional allegations linked to a wider cheating scheme involving more victims were taken into consideration during the legal proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case highlights the serious consequences of abusing positions of trust in the workplace, particularly within disciplined organizations where junior personnel may feel pressured to comply with unlawful requests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
