CRAWLEY-<\/strong> Virgin Atlantic (VS)<\/a> has confirmed the death of a 23-year-old aircraft engineer who was crushed by falling machinery inside a Boeing 787-9 fuel tank at London Heathrow Airport (LHR)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Georgie Buxton spent four weeks in intensive care after the hangar accident before life support was withdrawn earlier this month. The Dreamliner has been pulled from service while the airline, Boeing and the relevant authorities investigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fatal Maintenance Incident Under Investigation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Buxton was carrying out maintenance tests on the Boeing 787-9<\/a> inside a hangar at Heathrow when machinery suddenly fell on him. He was working inside the aircraft’s fuel tank at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was taken to hospital and remained in intensive care on life support for four weeks. His family kept a vigil at his bedside throughout, and the machines were eventually switched off earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virgin Atlantic confirmed to Simple Flying that Buxton was not killed by an engine and that he died in hospital. The airline has not stated what type of machinery was involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft technician was unmarried and lived near Heathrow in West London. He had worked for Virgin Atlantic for two years and was a popular member of the engineering team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aircraft Grounded Until Further Notice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Boeing 787-9 has been out of service since the accident while experts work to understand how the machinery failed. Virgin Atlantic management held talks with Boeing following the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The registration of the aircraft involved has not been publicly released. Flight tracking data shows three Virgin Atlantic 787-9s with no recorded flights over the past week. There is no confirmed date for the aircraft’s return to service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A source told The Sun<\/a>: “Georgie was a young and very loved member of the team. Everyone at Virgin is in shock.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virgin Atlantic Opens Its Own Safety Investigation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The airline has launched an internal safety investigation to establish the root cause of the incident. It has committed to working with the relevant authorities and Boeing throughout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virgin Atlantic stated it will also determine what additional controls are required for this type of maintenance work in future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Heathrow spokesperson said: “We were very sorry to hear of this tragic accident. Our thoughts are with Georgie’s family and friends, as well as all of our colleagues in the wider Virgin Atlantic family who feel this loss.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Career Move He Announced 2 Years Ago<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Two years ago, Buxton took to social media to tell family and friends he was leaving Ryanair (FR) to join Virgin Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He wrote: “I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as an Aircraft Technician at Virgin Atlantic!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s been a pleasure working with all the engineers and mechanics whilst at Ryanair in Stansted and I’ve been able to develop and learn a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Now it’s time to move on so I can develop and learn more on different airframes!!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had been based at London Stansted Airport (STN) during his time with the Irish carrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An inquest into the death will be opened and adjourned later this week at West London Coroner’s Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tributes have poured in for the Heathrow employee since news of his death emerged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virgin Atlantic’s Fleet and Network<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Virgin Atlantic operates 17 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, each carrying up to 264 passengers. The type was once the youngest section of the fleet, but a large renewal rollout has left the 787-9s among the oldest aircraft the airline operates, with an average age of around ten years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The carrier runs an all-widebody fleet of 43 aircraft. Alongside the 787-9s, it operates 12 Airbus A350-1000s, eight A330-900s and six A330-300s. A further 11 A330-900s are on order to replace the remaining A330-300s by the end of 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virgin Atlantic serves 23 year-round destinations and three seasonal destinations, rising to four when Phuket launches on October 18. The airline maintains a second UK base at Manchester Airport (MAN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
